BHPRSD Sports: Week in Review and Look Ahead

It was a big week for the tennis and track teams at Timber Creek.

Local baseball and softball teams had their final opportunity to improve their playoff resumes last week before the playoff cutoff date arrived. Some teams took advantage, while others slid down the standings.

It was also a big week for the tennis and track teams at Timber Creek.

Below is a look back at the week that was in local athletics, as well as a glimpse at this week’s schedule

BASEBALL

It was a productive week for Highland as the Tartans went 2-1. The week started with a 3-2 win over West Deptford at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, NY. The winning run came in the bottom of the seventh inning when Joe Sigismondi scored on a wild pitch. The Tartans also defeated Clearview, 5-1, in nine innings. Matt Miniconzi had a two-run single as part of a four-run ninth. The Tartans reached the cutoff date as a No. 8 seed and will host Lower Cape May or Oakcrest in the first round of the Group 3 playoffs.

Timber Creek went 1-1, picking up a 5-2 win over Shawnee and dropping a 7-6 decision to Lenape. DJ Robinson was 2-for-4 with a home run and a double against Shawnee. Brandon Cornelius was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the Chargers’ loss. Timber Creek is slated to be a No. 12 seed in the playoffs and should face Delsea in the first round.

It was a tough week for Triton as the Mustangs failed to score a run in three losses. Triton failed to qualify for the Group 4 playoffs.

SOFTBALL

It was a tough week for Triton, which dropped games to Shawnee, 4-2, and Washington Township, 5-4. The losses dropped the Mustangs down in the Group 4 standings, but they will still have a home game as a No. 8 seed. Toms River North is currently slotted as the No. 9 seed, and appears the Mustangs' likely opponent.

Timber Creek continued its second-half slide, falling to Camden Catholic by a 7-0 score. The Chargers, who have lost four straight, will be a No. 10 seed in the Group 3 playoffs. They will likely face Westhampton Tech in the first round.

Highland went 0-3 and failed to make the Group 3 playoffs.

BOYS’ TENNIS

It was a banner week for Timber Creek. The No. 6 seed Chargers picked up the first with a 4-1 decision over Ocean City.

The Chargers' playoff run came to a close with a 4-1 loss to No. 3 Lower Cape May on Monday afternoon.

Timber Creek also had a 5-0 win against Camden last week. The win over the Panthers on Friday clinched at least a share of the Patriot Division title for the Chargers.

Triton picked up its third win of the season in a 3-2 decision over Camden.

GOLF

Two local golfers competed against the best in the area Monday as part of the Sectional Tournament. Timber Creek’s Tyler Lathrop and Highland’s Bryan Magin were the lone Black Horse Pike Regional golfers to qualify for the tournament this year.

GIRLS’ TRACK       

Alicia Terrell had a standout performance at the Camden County Track and Field Championships, winning the high jump with a leap of 5 fee, 2 inches, while placing second in the 100 hurdles.

Teammate Breshae Pierce finished second in the 400 and third in the 800 Saturday. Pierce crossed the line in 57.76 seconds in the 400 and 2:29.12 in the 800. The Chargers’ Sierra Jordan won the shot put with a throw of 34-00.75. Chargers teammates Kelsey Kohlepp and Terissa Ellerson placed first and second in the discus.

Triton’s Brook Whitmire won the pole vault, clearing 10-02, almost two feet higher than the second-place finisher. Deja Bullock was third in the high jump.

BOYS’ TRACK

Quanzell Lambert and Jamad Muse took home as the Chargers finished second behind Cherry Hill East at the Camden County Track and Field Championships. Lambert won the shot put and Muse claimed the 200 championship. Josh Gray also had a big day, placing second in the long jump and triple jump.

Highland’s Steve Maine also had a standout day, winning the 1600 and 3200 by seven and eight seconds, respectively. The Tartans' Steve Lafferty was second in the 3200 and pole vaulter Neil Rizzo and Joe Johnson were second and third in the pole vault.

Timber Creek’s Calvin Lowe was second in the discus, while Triton’s Kyle Kirschner was third.

Timber Creek followed up its impressive showing at the Camden Couty Track and Field Championships with an Olympic Conference Patriot Division-clinching win over Winslow Township Monday.

THIS WEEK

- The Triton and Timber Creek track teams compete in the Olympic Conference Championships scheduled for today.

- The Triton softball team takes on Pennsauken Tuesday and Bishop Eustace Friday.

- The Highland baseball team looks to stay hot against Deptford Wednesday.
