BHPRSD Sports: Week in Review, Look Ahead

A look back at the week that was in the local sports scene, as well as a glimpse into this week's schedule.

After a slow start, the Triton boys’ basketball team seems to have found its rhythm. The Mustangs have been led by Brian Keller. Meanwhile, the Timber Creek girls' basketball team is showing no signs of its youth and the Chargers’ wrestling team is living up to expectations.

Also last week, Timber Creek linebacker Quanzell Lambert .

All that and more can be found below as we take a look back at the week that was for the local athletic teams.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

After a bumpy start to the season, the Triton boys' hoops team appear to have found its footing. The Mustangs shrugged off four straight losses to open the season and bounced back with a pair of victories. Triton defeated Cherry Hill East, 59-52, thanks to a big fourth quarter that saw it outscore the opposition, 24-14. Brian Keller had a team-high 22 points, while Dante Vaughan netted 20.

The Mustangs followed that with a 60-56 win over previously unbeaten Shawnee. Triton trailed 20-7 after the first quarter, but thanks to 25 points from Keller and 14 from Dylan Daniluk, Triton pulled out the win.

Timber Creek picked up its second win of the season, a 61-56 win over Cherry Hill West. The Chargers (2-5) got 20 points from Justice Davila and 17 from T.J. LaScala.

Highland also got win No. 2 last week, downing Cumberland, 46-25. Kerron Johnson and Tyree Brown each scored 13 for the Tartans (2-5).

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Timber Creek went 2-1 last week, scooping up wins over Winslow (50-47) and Cherry Hill West (37-25), before falling to Eastern (66-39). In the win against Winslow, the Chargers overcame a 20-6 first-quarter deficit to win in overtime. Freshman Brittany Martin had a game-high 16 points, six rebounds, and four steals, while Desiree Furbert had 12 points, 10 rebounds and three steals.

Joanna Torres scored a career-high 13 points as the Tartans grabbed their second win in a 42-34 win over Cumberland Tuesday. Morgan Reid chipped in with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Ayanna Williams had eight points and five assists.

Triton dropped a pair of games to fall to 0-6.

WRESTLING

Timber Creek had a dominating weekend, sweeping a quad meet with wins over Lenape (61-9), Hanover (35-27) and Cherry Hill West (49-31) to improve to 5-0. Bryce Shade, Robert Shade and Schalor Blackshear each scored pins in the close victory over Hanover. The Chargers can credit some of their fast start to a grueling that featured a pair of difficult tournaments.

Highland scored a 51-30 win over Tri-County Conference Royal Division foe Cumberland. Brian Ceaser, Nick Filippo, Sheldon Morris, Mark Gillis, Justin Incarvite and Martel Harrisson each won by pin.

It was a tough week for the Mustangs, who went 0-4 to fall to 0-5. Bright spots for Triton were Kyle Ulerick, Kevin Kelly and Seth Tinsley, who scored pins in a 45-25 loss to Seneca.

SWIMMING

Highland (4-1) shrugged off its first loss of the season (110-73) to Clearview by defeating Pitman, 91-94. Sarah Jahanbakhsh had wins in the 100 free and 100 back, while Michale Lombaro (50 free), Erika Vance (500 free) and David Stucke (100 breast) each won an event.

Triton fell to 0-3 with losses to Sterling (104-64) and Haddon Heights (115-55).

Timber Creek (0-3) also lost to Sterling, 112-58.
