BHPRSD Sports: Week in Review

The winter sports season has come to an end for Highland, Timber Creek and Triton.

The winter season officially came to a close for all teams this past week. The last seven days saw the playoffs come and go for five basketball teams, while a pair of Timber Creek wrestlers demonstrated that they are among the best in the state.

Before we turn our attention to the spring season, we take one final look at the winter in this edition of Week in Review.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

After ending the season on a four-game losing streak, things looked bleak for Triton entering the playoffs. Yet, whatever momentum was lost during that slide didn’t stop the No. 11 Mustangs from knocking off No. 6 , in the opening round of the Group 4 playoffs. Brian Keller led the way with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

Unfortunately, there would not be a second upset. Olympic Conference rival Shawnee—the No. 3 seed—proved too much for Triton,  with a 64-51 win. Dylan Daniluk finished with a team-high 12 points.

Timber Creek nearly pulled off what would have been considered the upset of year but the No. 16 Chargers came up just short in a 38-35 loss to No. 1 Lacey in the first round of the Group 3 playoffs. Timber Creek ended the year by losing 11 of its final 12 games.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

The playoffs were not a particularly pleasant experience for the local girls' hoops teams, with Timber Creek, Highland and Triton all coming out on the losing end of lopsided margins.

As a No. 16 seed, Triton had to go to No. 1 Shawnee and was overwhelmed in a 70-25 loss. The Mustangs were never able to get started, falling behind 25-6 after the first quarter.

One day earlier, Timber Creek and Highland suffered the same fate. The No. 14 Tartans fell to No. 3 Seneca, 65-21, while the No. 9 Chargers lost to No. 8 Lower Cape May, 58-30.

WRESTLING

Brandon Keller has been considered one of the area's best wrestlers all season so it comes as little surprise that he was the last Charger standing at the State Wrestling Championships in Atlantic City last weekend. Keller made it all the way to the , where he came up just short in his bid to reach the top of the podium. Keller was deadlocked with South Plainfield’s Scott DelVecchio deep into the third period, but was taken down with 25 seconds remaining for the decisive points in a 3-1 decision.

Keller finished his junior year with 106 career wins, giving him a chance to surpass 140 for his career, which would place him among the state's elite.

Not to be forgotten is Timber Creek senior Ricky Carter, who capped his fine career with a fourth-place finish in Atlantic City. Carter won a series of wrestlebacks to reach the consolation finals. He nearly took home a third-place result, but fell to Ocean Township’s Zack Heartlting, 3-2.
