BHPRSD Sports: Week in Review and Look Ahead

The Timber Creek boys' tennis and Triton softball teams moved closer to division titles with strong performances last week.

The Triton softball team continued to roll in its quest for a fourth straight Olympic Conference division title, winning a thriller over Cherry Hill East. Meanwhile, the Timber Creek golf team found its swing and the Triton baseball team had its best week of the season.

Below is a look back at the week in local athletics, as well as a glimpse at this week’s schedule.

BASEBALL

Highland went 1-1 on the week, earning an 8-5 win over Cumberland and falling to GCIT, 12-9. Against the Colts, Jay Smith had three RBIs, while Joe Sigismondi earned the save pitching the game's last three innings. Sigismondi also reached base four times and scored three runs. The Tartans have been a much-improved team since taking a trip down to Florida over spring break.

Timber Creek was able to shrug off a 7-6 loss to Winslow Township to earn an 11-1 win over Deptford in the consolation game of the Russ Spicer Classic Saturday in Haddonfield. Kevin Kaiser had four hits, while DJ Robinson and Brandon Cornelius had three each. Kaiser, Robinson and Cornelius combined for nine of team’s 11 RBIs.

Triton had its best week of the season, going 2-1. The Mustangs jumped out to an 8-2 lead and held on for a 12-7 win over Winslow Township. Eric Stone had two doubles and Art Flemming had a triple in support of winning pitcher Dante Licketto in the Mustangs’ 11-1 win over LEAP Academy.

SOFTBALL

In a big Olympic Conference game, Triton edged Cherry Hill East, 6-5, thanks to a two-run sixth inning. Brielle Reighn pitched a complete game, striking out four and Danielle Martinez was 2-for-4, with three runs and an RBI. At 8-2, the Mustangs have positioned themselves for a run at another division title.

Highland broke through for its second win of the season in a big way, drubbing Pennsauken Tech, 18-0. The Tartans pounded out 17 hits over five innings, while holding Pennsauken Tech hitless.

It was a week of extremes for Timber Creek, which won a game and lost another by mercy rule. After falling to Paul VI, 13-3, Timber Creek topped Winslow Township, 11-0. Against Winslow, Tori Kendall had two doubles in support of winning pitcher Brianna Fisher.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Timber Creek moved its record to 8-2 after a 2-1 week that included a win over Triton. The Chargers Diondre Hartwell and Justin Quigley scored two-set victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, while the doubles teams of Devin Eager/Mike Strauch and Alexie He/Alex Kourahanis also won in straight sets. Triton’s Drew Deiling won 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 against Nate Elis at No. 1 singles, a reversal of their three-set match earlier in the season.

Highland picked up its second win of the season, 3-2, over Lindenwold. Christopher McCullough scored a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles, while the doubles teams of Injamul Azad/Kenny Kiocho and Grant Jamil/Ajaun Wissinger won in straiught sets.

GOLF

Local golfers are gearing up for the Carl Arena/Al Rifkin Memorial Tournament—a showcase of the top golfers in South Jersey. There is an expected field of around 300 golfers who will take to Running Deer on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Highland improved to 4-6 with a 188-193 win over Cumberland. Triton picked up its third win of the season, posting a 174 against Winslow. Timber Creek made the biggest jump this week, improving to 5-6 by shooting a 178 in a tri-meet sweep of Camden Catholic and Cherokee. The Chargers also shot a 177 in a win over Winslow.

TRACK

The Timber Creek boys’ track team track team continued its Olympic Conference dominance, winning all over the track and field in a 105-35 win over Shawnee. Highland got wins from Steve Maine (1,600), Steve Lafferty (3,200), Cory Constantine (800), Kerron Johnson (200) and Neal Rizzo (high jump) in a 85-55 loss to Delsea. Triton fell to Cherry Hill West 86-53.

The Highland girls’ team got wins from Chrisi Bush (3,200) and Michelle Impoco (discus) in a loss to Delsea.

THIS WEEK

- Highland and Timber Creek face off on the golf course Tuesday.

- The Highland baseball team faces a couple of tough conference rivals in Williamstown (Wednesday) and Delsea (Friday).

- Local golfers take aim at the Carl Arena-Al Rifkin Memorial Tournament at Running Deer Thursday.

- The Timber Creek boys’ tennis team looks to continue its winning ways against Eastern (today), Cherokee (Wednesday) and Bishop Eustace (Friday).

- The Timber Creek boys’ and girls’ track teams host Winslow Township Wednesday at 3:45 p.m.

- The Triton softball team has a big game against Shawnee (13-3) Wednesday.
