BHPRSD Sports Week in Review, Look Ahead

A look back at the week that was, and a look ahead to this week's athletic schedule.

Sam Cyliax and Olivia McEachern each found the back of the net four times last week for their respective soccer teams, highlighting a busy week for local sports teams.

Below is a look back at the week that was, and a look ahead to this week’s athletic schedule at Highland, Timber Creek and Triton high schools.

BOYS' SOCCER

It was a banner week for Timber Creek as it outscored its opponents 8-0 in a pair of victories. Giuseppe DeLuca had a pair of goals in a 6-0 win over Pennsauken and Jeffrey Morgan and Alex Kourahanis each scored in 2-0 win over Seneca. Andrew Garcia was credited with both shutouts.

Sam Cyliax scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to lead Triton to a 2-0 win over Cherry Hill West on Monday, and then scored twice more in a 4-1 win over Camden Catholic to cap a 2-0 week for the Mustangs.

Although the Highland offense was unable to find the back of the net this week, goalie Zach Greenwood made sure the team didn’t leave empty-handed, making 11 saves in a 0-0 tie with Kingsway. Earlier in the week the in a 3-0 loss to Clearview.

GIRLS' SOCCER

A hat trick by Olivia McEachern on Wednesday was not enough to keep Timber Creek from suffering its first setback of the season, a 4-3 loss to Cherry Hill East. Earlier in the week, McEachern found the back of the net one minute into the second overtime to give the Chargers a 3-2 win over Washington Township.

It was a tough Week for Highland, which was outscored 13-1 in losses to Cumberland and Kingsway.

The Mustangs suffered a tough 2-1 loss to Cherokee in a game that was decided by a goal with 1:30 left in overtime. Abi Fakolujo scored for Triton, which led 1-0 at the half.

FOOTBALL

Calvin Lowe’s feet helped the Chargers remain undefeated as he ran for a pair of third-quarter scores in over Moorestown. The Chargers' defense also played a key role in the win, forcing the Quakers into three turnovers.

Triton got off to a fast start, scoring touchdowns on two of its first three possessions, but in a 33-13 loss Saturday. The highlight of the game came when quarterback Brian Keller found junior running back Josh Woods for a 76-yard touchdown early in the first quarter.

The losing streak reached 16 games for Highland, which was no match for.

FIELD HOCKEY

Fueled by two goals from Rebekah Alter and Jennifer O’Neill, the Chargers got their first win of the year, a 6-0 decision over Winslow. Nicole Melchiorre and Candice Dunn also scored, while Jessie Kinzler had two assists. Casey Schindler needed just two saves to preserve the shutout.

Triton was able to get a goal in the second half to earn a 1-1 tie against Cherry Hill West on Monday, but fell to Clearview, 4-1, on Wednesday.

Connie Mangino and Ashley Connor both scored as Highland earned a 2-2 tie with Vineland. Emily Mitchell assisted on both goals.

GIRLS' TENNIS

Highland picked up its first win of the year on Wednesday, defeating Williamstown, 4-1. Singles players Gabrielle Chiaradonna and Kelsey Gladden earned wins as did the doubles teams of Julia Baumle/Samantha Damiano and Alexa Harrop/Kristina Kaighn.

Timber Creek against Triton on Monday in dominating fashion. The Chargers are now 4-1 on the year.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Steve Maine and Steve Laffetry placed second and third to help the Highland boys' cross-country team record a 25-30 win over Clearview on Tuesday.

The Highland girls' team lost 17-19 to Clearview on Tuesday. Chrisi Bush was the top Tartans finisher, placing third at 23:32.

THIS WEEK

- The Timber Creek football team will again face a tough test when it travels to take on 2-1 Kingsway on Friday. The Chargers are looking to go to 3-0. Also on Friday, Triton will be looking to shake off its first loss of the season when it takes on a Cumberland team still searching for its first win. Finally, the Highland football team will look to snap its losing streak as it travels to take on Delsea at 7 p.m.

- The Timber Creek girls’ soccer team will be tested this week as it takes on 2-1-2 Cherry Hill West on Wednesday.

- The Triton boys’ soccer team will face a pair of quality opponents this week as it travels to face Seneca on Tuesday and hosts Delsea on Thursday.

- A couple of local girls’ soccer teams will compete for bragging rights on Friday when Highland travels to take on Triton at 3:45 p.m. Triton will be heavily favored, but rivalry games always make for great competition.
