BHPRSD Sports Week in Review, Look Ahead

A look back at the week that was in Gloucester Township athletics, and a peek ahead to what this week's calendar holds.

Last week brought with it a landmark win for the Timber Creek girls’ soccer team and a thrilling finish to the Triton-Delsea football game that saw the Mustangs come out victorious.

Below is a look at the week that was in local athletics, and a glimpse into what this week’s schedule has to offer.

BOYS' SOCCER

The Chargers stretched their winning streak to seven games with 7-0 and 5-0 wins against Paul VI and Lenape, respectively. Andrew Garcia recorded the shutout in each to bring his total to five on the season.

Triton was able to bounce back from a 4-0 loss to Shawnee with a 2-2 tie against Eastern. Sam Cyliax scored both goals, including the tying goal with 10 minutes left as the Mustangs erased a 2-0 halftime deficit.

It was a tough week for Highland, as it lost two games by a combined 11-2 margin.

GIRLS' SOCCER

It was an emotional week for the Timber Creek girls’ soccer team, which shook off a loss to Bishop Eustace by defeating Paul VI, 3-2, for . The winning goal was scored by Tori Sarlo, who found the back of the net for the first time in her career with just 1:58 left in the game.

Triton also earned a victory over Paul VI, 2-1, and added a 4-2 win over Camden Catholic. The Mustangs got two goals from Abi Fakolujo against the Irish. Triton did suffer one setback as a pair of goals from Paige Bergman wasn’t enough to avoid a 4-3 loss to Seneca.

Highland went 1-1-1 on the week with a 2-1 win over Delsea and a 2-2 tie with Glassboro. The tie came in the finals of the Kick Start Tournament, which was rained out in the opening week of the season. Autumn Buck tied the game by converting a penalty kick with six minutes left and Ashleah Hart found the back of the net in the first half.

FOOTBALL

The contest between Triton and Delsea delivered as expected Friday night, with the Mustangs pulling out a . Mustangs quarterback Brian Keller tossed the game-winning touchdown to Alan Richards with 49 seconds remaining and the defense held on as Triton moved to 4-1.

Highland was unable to get going in a game that pitted two winless teams, as it was blanked by Clearview, 42-0. The Pioneers ran for more than 300 yards and added another 143 yards in the air. The game was tied after the first quarter, but Clearview put up 21 points in the second quarter to pull away.

FIELD HOCKEY

Timber Creek got the better of Highland in a local showdown, 5-0. Rebekah Alter scored twice and Stephanie D'Angelo, Candice Dunn, and Jessie Kinzler each found the back off the cage for the Chargers. Goalie Jennifer O'Neill had five saves to record the shutout.

The Chargers also scored a thrilling 5-4 win over Paul VI. Aisha Desai had a hat trick and Rebekah Alter scored twice in the win.

Triton had a tough week, losing all three of its contests.

GIRLS' TENNIS

The NJSIAA South Jersey Group III playoffs came and went for a pair of Gloucester Township teams. Timber Creek entered the playoffs as a No. 6 seed, but were knocked out in the first round by No. 11 Hammonton, 3-2. Highland also had an early exit as the No. 13 Tartans could not go toe-to-toe with No. 4 Seneca in a 5-0 loss.

CROSS-COUNTRY

The Highland boys' cross-country team had a statement-making performance over the weekend at the South Jersey Open. The Tartans took first in Group II. Stephen Lafferty (16:34) and Steve Maine (16:35) finished third and fourth, fueling the team to the victory.

THIS WEEK

- The girls’ soccer teams at Triton and Timber Creek will go head-to-head at Triton on Tuesday in a matchup of two of the area’s best clubs.

- The Timber Creek boys’ soccer team will be competing in the Kick Start Tournament final on Tuesday and in invitation-only Coaches Tournament on Friday with an opponent and time to be determined.

- The Timber Creek football team comes off its bye week to host Woodrow Wilson on Friday at 7 p.m.

- The Triton girls' tennis team will have no time to rest this week as it competes in five matches in five days, beginning today at Cherry Hill East away beginning at 3:45 p.m.

- Highland football returns to the field on Friday as it travels to Deptford looking to pick up its first win of the season.
