BHPRSD Sports Week in Review, Look Ahead

The boys' and girls' cross country teams highlight a good week in BHPRSD athletics.

The local boys’ and girls’ cross country teams fared well this past weekend at the Camden County Championships, highlighted by Highland’s Steve Maine, who won the boys’ meet. Also last week, the Timber Creek boys’ and girls' soccer teams won Coaches Tournament games, and the Chargers’ football team won in a battle of unbeatens.

Below is a look at the week that was, and a look ahead to this week’s athletic schedule.

BOYS' CROSS COUNTRY

Highland sophomore Steve Maine continued his dominant season by placing first overall at the Camden County Championships on Saturday. Maine crossed the line in 16 minutes, 38 seconds—three seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Maine had an average mile time of 5:22 in his victory.

A trio of Maine’s teammates was not far behind. Stephen Lafferty and Joseph Benckert took 6th and 7th place, respectively, at 17:07 and 17:08, while Cory Constantine was 9th, at 17:19.

As a team, Highland finished tied for first place with Cherry Hill East.

Allen Cameron was the top finisher for Timber Creek. Cameron crossed the line in a time of 17:45, good enough for 13th place. Triton’s top finisher was Brandon Sweeny, who took 47th.

GIRLS' CROSS COUNTRY

It was a good showing for local runners at the Camden County Championships on Saturday. Timber Creek’s Shad Lavallias was the top local finisher, placing second overall in a time of 21:10. Teammate Janel Shipotofsky came in two seconds later in third place. Triton’s Melanie Derham was the next local finisher, taking ninth in 21:51. The Mustangs’ Brook Whitmire was 13th.

Highland’s top finisher was Chrisi Bush, who crossed the line in 14th at 22:43. She was followed by teammate Jessica Simber at 22:44.

FOOTBALL

Led by a defense that held Woodrow Wilson to minus-2 yards in the first half, Timber Creek picked up a over the Tigers. Khalil Pierce rushed for a pair of touchdowns, while Kevin Potter had one score on the ground and one receiving. Each team entered the Friday night game 4-0, but the Chargers showed they are clearly at a higher level.

The Highland defense had its best game of the season, but the offense never got going in a 14-2 loss to Deptford. The loss dropped the Tartans to 0-6 on the season.

BOYS' SOCCER

The Timber Creek boys’ scored a big 1-0 victory over Lenape in the first round of the Coaches Tournament Friday. Jeff Morgan threaded a pass to Giuseppe DeLuca, who found the back of the net for the game-winner.

The Triton boys' soccer team went 1-0-1 on the week, delivering a 5-1 win over Paul VI after tying Cherry Hill West, 1-1. Grgo Sevo, Joe Archbald, Austin Kopfle, Jeff Baldino and Brett Bowne each scored in the victory.

Highland lost a pair of 2-0 games to Haddon Heights and Cinnaminson.

GIRLS' SOCCER

It was a big week for the Timber Creek girls soccer team as it picked up its first Coaches Tournament win in program history on Friday, 3-0 over Cherry Hill West. Elise Pratt scored twice and Olivia McEachern also netted a goal in the win. Earlier in the week, the Chargers dominated local rival Triton to the tune of 6-0. in the win.

The Mustangs didn’t dwell on the loss long, though, as they responded with a 3-2 win over Cherry Hill West. Paige Bergman scored twice and Gabi Urban added a goal.

The Tartans lost a 6-0 decision to Haddon Heights.

FIELD HOCKEY

The Triton field hockey team picked up a 3-0 win over Cherry Hill West on Tuesday. Gina Ayusa scored a pair of goals and Allison Nye also scored as the Mustangs did all of their scoring in the first half. The result was a big improvement from the teams’ first meeting of the year, which ended in a 1-1 tie.

Also on the week, Timber Creek lost 8-1 to Seneca and Highland lost 13-0 to Clearview.

THIS WEEK

- Highland’s boys’ soccer team will have revenge on its mind when it travels to take on Deptford on Tuesday. The Tartans faced the Spartans in the opening round of the Kick-Start Tournament, and fell in shootouts.

- Highland's girls’ tennis team will finish its season up on Wednesday at home against Williamstown.

- The Timber Creek and Triton girls' tennis teams will take part in the Olympic Conference Tournament today and Tuesday, beginning at 1 p.m.

- The Timber Creek girls’ soccer team will take on Eastern on Friday in the second round of the Coaches Tournament.

- The boys’ and girls’ cross country teams at Triton and Timber Creek will compete in the Olympic Conference Championships on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

- The Highland football team returns home to take on Moorestown, Friday at 7 p.m.

- The Triton football team is back off its bye week and will hit the road to take on Bishop Eustace, Friday at 7 p.m.

- The Timber Creek football team will look to keep its winning ways going this week when it travels to take on Eastern, also on Friday at 7 p.m.
