BHPRSD Sports Week in Review and Look Ahead

The Timber Creek boys' soccer team won a South Jersey title, while a pair of football teams won big in playoff quarterfinals.

Although the the number of Black Horse Pike Regional School District teams left competing in the fall season continues to dwindle, there has been no shortage of drama on the athletic fields.

Last week's action was highlighted by the Timber Creek boys' and girls' soccer teams, as well as the Chargers' and Mustangs' football squads. cross-country runner Steve Maine also had a big weekend to keep his season going.

Below is a look back at the week that was in local athletics, as well as a glimpse at this week's schedule.

FOOTBALL

The football team got scores from all three phases of the game in a 26-7 win over Southern in a Group IV quarterfinal contest. The Mustangs got second-quarter touchdown runs from Brian Keller and Josh Burns, and then sealed the game in the second half on a fake field goal and an interception return for scores. The win sets the No. 5 Mustangs up with a semifinal matchup against No. 1 Pennsauken. Earlier this season, Pennsauken handed Triton its only loss, 33-13.

is also on to the semifinals after a. Following the same template as the Mustangs, the Chargers got touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams. Khalil Pierce rushed for an 87-yard touchdown, Kevin Potter had a 57-yard punt return and Andrew Brown had a 79-yard interception return to seal the win.

The Chargers will host No. 4 Woodrow Wilson in the Group III semifinals. The two teams met earlier in the season, with the Chargers dominating in a 34-13 win.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Steve Maine kept his season going by the slimmest of margins last weekend, earning the final wild card position at the Group Championships at Holmdel. Maine, who placed second at Sectionals, crossed the line in 12th place. The top 10 runners in each group qualify for the Meet of Champions, while the next 10 top times earn wild card spots. Maine, who crossed the line in 16:43 finished in a tie with Haddonfield’s Greg Halla for the final two wild card spots and will get to race again this weekend.

GIRLS' SOCCER

A great season came to a stunning conclusion Monday afternoon as the No. 1 seeded , 2-1, in the Group III semifinals. Timber Creek led 1-0 with 13 minutes left, but surrendered two goals, including the game-winner with two minutes left, to endure a heartbreaking defeat. The girls finished the year with a 12-4-1 record.

BOYS' SOCCER

It’s for the Timber Creek boys' soccer team after a thrilling shootout win in the South Jersey championship game. It looked as though the Chargers’ season would come to a disappointing conclusion, but sophomore Alex Kourahanis found the back of the net with less than two minutes to play to draw his team even with Ocean City, 1-1. After a scoreless overtime, the game went to shootout, where the Chargers connected on in a 5-4 win.

Timber Creek will now look to win a Group III state title, beginning Tuesday with a semifinal matchup with Princeton at Toms River North at 7:30 p.m.

THIS WEEK

- The Timber Creek boys’ soccer team travels to Toms River on Tuesday to take on Princeton in a state semifinal.

- The Triton football team travels to take on Pennsauken in a Group IV semifinal Saturday at 1 p.m.

- The Timber Creek football team hosts Woodrow Wilson in a Group III semifinal Friday at 7 p.m.
