BHPRSD Sports Week in Review, Look Ahead

A big close to the season for Timber Creek girls' tennis highlights the recap.

It was a big close to the season for the Timber Creek girls’ tennis team, which collected a host of honors for its work on the court. Meanwhile, the Triton and Timber Creek football teams kept winning and the Chargers’ boys’ soccer team advanced to the finals of the Coaches Tournament.

Below, is a look at the week that was, as well as a glimpse into this week’s schedule.

GIRLS' TENNIS

A banner year for the Timber Creek girls’ tennis team came to a close last week with a host of honors handed out to the Chargers. No. 1 singles player Jordan Crawley became the first Chargers’ female player to advance to the semifinals of the Olympic Conference Tournament and by doing so became the first female player to earn first-team All-Olympic Conference status. Jordan’s younger sister, Aarynn Crawley, who plays at No. 2 singles, earned second-team All-Olympic Conference honors.

The first doubles team of senior Brianna Evans and sophomore Amanda Riiff wrapped up their season by winning the Olympic Conference Tournament and grabbing first-team All-Olympic Conference honors. The second doubles team of senior Miranda Maples and junior Naomi Payne were selected to the conference's second team.

BOYS' SOCCER

Giuseppe DeLuca scored twice and Andrew Garcia posted the shutout with five saves to lift second-seeded Timber Creek to a 2-0 win over Shawnee in a South Jersey Soccer Coaches Association tourney semifinal game. Timber Creek (15-2-1) will meet top-seeded Cherokee for the SJSCA title on Saturday at Eastern High School at 6 p.m.

Joe Marano scored one minute into the second overtime off an assist from John Kennedy to give Highland a 4-3 win over Triton in the consolation game of the Kick-Start Tournament on Friday. It was the second goal of the game for Marano. Also scoring for Highland were Max Seigfried and Jason Spence. The Mustangs got goals from Shane Gotthold, Anthony Markulics and Alex Santey.

Earlier in the week

GIRLS' SOCCER

Olivia McEachern scored in the second half but it wasn’t enough as Timber Creek saw its South Jersey Soccer Coaches Association tourney run come to an end in a 3-1 loss to Lenape in a semifinal matchup. Lenape got a pair of goals in the first half and was able to hold on to advance to the championship. Kate Decarlo made 12 saves for Timber Creek in the loss.

Ang Martorano made 15 saves but it wasn’t enough to keep Triton (7-6-1) from falling to Bishop Eustace, 3-0.

Highland went 0-2 on the week, losing 3-0 to Gloucester Catholic and 2-1 to Kingsway. Jackie Countey scored against the Dragons.

FIELD HOCKEY

Allison Nye scored a pair of second-half goals to lead Triton to a 2-0 win over Paul VI on Tuesday. The Mustangs kept the good vibes going three days later in a 3-0 win over Winslow to improve to 6-7-1.

It was a tough week for Timber Creek and Highland as the teams combined to go 0-3, with each loss a shutout.

CROSS-COUNTRY

The Olympic Conference Championships were held on Friday as runners from Timber Creek and Triton got to compete against the best the conference had to offer. The Chargers’ Cameron Allen was the top local finisher, taking 16th place in 16:59. Brandon Sweeney was the top Mustangs’ finisher, placing 77th in 19:01.

On the girls’ side, Timber Creek’s Janel Shipotofsky took 12th in 20:17 and Sade Lavallias was 14th at 20:32. Alyssa Cziryak was the top Triton runner, taking 23rd in 20:55.

FOOTBALL

Triton got two touchdowns from running back Josh Woods to win a defensive battle, 13-0, over Bishop Eustace. Chris Baylor led the defense effort with .

with a win over Eastern, but it was not as easy a game as most expected. The Chargers needed a touchdown by Khalil Pierce with 3:07 left in the game to squeak out a 13-7 win over the host Vikings. Pierce finished with both touchdowns.

The losing streak continued for Highland as it could not keep pace with Moorestown, falling 48-16.

THIS WEEK

- The Highland cross-country teams look to make a statement on Wednesday as they compete in the Tri-County Conference Showcase.

- The playoff brackets for boys’ soccer, girls’ soccer and field hockey should be released by Thursday.

- The Timber Creek boys’ soccer team competes in the Coaches Tournament championship game against No. 1 Cherokee on Saturday at Eastern, 6 p.m.

- Timber Creek hosts Seneca on the gridiron, Friday at 7 p.m.

- Triton football hosts Paul VI, Friday at 7 p.m.

- The Tartans’ football team travels to Gloucester Catholic on Saturday for a 10:30 a.m. kickoff.
