BHPRSD Sports: Week in Review, Look Ahead

Below is a look back at the week that was and a glimpse at this week's schedule.

The bridge between Christmas and New Year’s Day didn’t feature a ton of games for the local high school sports teams, but it did provide an opportunity for a few squads to post their first wins of the young winter season. The Timber Creek girls’ basketball team shook off an 0-2 start to win a tournament, while the Chargers boys' and Highland girls’ hoops squads pulled out victories on consolation games.

Below is a look back at the week that was, and a glimpse at this week’s schedule.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

Timber Creek posted its first win of the season in the consolation game of the James G. Atkinson Memorial Holiday Basketball Classic. The Chargers got 15 points from Eric Church to claim a 38-25 victory over Glassboro.

Highland dropped to 1-5 after a pair of lopsided losses to Lenape and Haddonfield. Marvin Ayi-Bamah scored 11 points in the Tartans' 54-30 loss to Lenape, while Aaron Canty scored 10 points in a 65-43 loss to Haddonfield.

Triton is still looking for its first win of the season after falling to Eastern, 68-45. John Bowers scored 16 points and Isaiah Baylor had 12 in the loss.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Timber Creek freshman guard Brittany Martin produced a 23-point effort to lead the Chargers to a 47-38 win over Paulsboro in the championship of the James G. Atkinson Memorial Holiday Classic.

Sophomore guard Amanda Riiff added 12 points as the Chargers won their first Atkinson title since 2008 and improved to 2-2 on the season. Earlier in the tournament, Martin and Riiff led Timber Creek to a .

After dropping four straight to open the season, the Tartans got into the win column with a 44-29 victory over Gateway in the consolation game of the Angela Anderson Classic at Clayton High.

Highland led by three at the half and the game was tied at 25 entering the fourth before the Tartans pulled away with a 19-4 run. Ayanna Williams scored a team-high 15 points and was selected to the All-Tournament team.

WRESTLING

The Chargers headed up north on Wednesday to compete against top teams including Delbarton, Paulsboro, Delsea, Absegami and West Essex in the Mustang Classic at Brick Memorial. Brandon Keller thrived against the top competition, claiming the 132 division with an 11-2 major decision against Brick’s Alec Donovan. Dom Ruggierrio (145), Bryce Shade (152) and Robert Shade (170) each left with a third-place finish.

THIS WEEK

- The Highland boys’ and girls' swim teams will be in action tonight at Clearview at 7 p.m. The teams will take on Pitman Friday.

- The Highland girls’ basketball team will be busy as it takes on Cumberland (today), Delsea (Thursday) and Haddon Heights (Friday) this week.

- The Timber Creek girls’ basketball team will also have a trio of games this week as it takes on Winslow (Tuesday), Cherry Hill West (Thursday) and Eastern (Friday).

- The Chargers wrestling team travels to take on Bishop Eustace Wednesday at 6 p.m.

- The Triton boys’ basketball team will have two chances to post its first win of the season. The Mustangs host Cherry Hill West today at 5:15 p.m. and travel to Shawnee for a game Thursday at 7 p.m.

- The Triton wrestling team hosts Shawnee Wednesday at 6 p.m.
