BHPRSD Sports Week in Review/Preview: Playoffs Underway

Loacl baseball and softball teams take aim at the playoffs.

It’s all about playoffs and championships this time of the year, as several teams either wrapped up division titles last week, or found out where their playoff journey will begin.

Below is a look back at the week that was in local athletics, as well as a glimpse at this week’s schedule.

BASEBALL

If there is such a thing as gaining momentum from a loss, achieved that in its final game before the playoffs, taking Washington Township to the edge in a 10-9 loss. Washington Township is one of the top teams in South Jersey this season, posting a 21-2 record as a Group 4 school in a difficult Olympic Conference.

The Tartans led by a run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Township stages a rally, to steal the win.

Highland—which opened up the playoffs Monday—also beat Deptford (5-2) and lost to Kingsway (9-4).

went 1-2 last week with its victory coming against Pennsauken, 7-1. D.J. Williams pitched a complete game, striking out nine, and Steve Rodier had a two-run homer. The Chargers take on Manchester Township in the Group 3 playoffs Tuesday.

Triton defeated Maple Shade, 11-10, Friday to snap an eight-game losing streak. John DeLuca delivered the big blow, connecting on a grand slam.

SOFTBALL

Triton on a high note after a come-from-behind win against Bishop Eustace Friday. The Mustangs trailed 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, but scored twice to pull out the win. Jen Piro tied the game with a two-out triple and Desiree Martinez singled in the winning run. Triton also had a 10-8 win over Cherry Hill East last week.

The Mustangs open the playoffs Tuesday as a No. 8 seed in Group 4. They host No. 9 Atlantic City.

After a string of losses, Timber Creek got back on track with wins over Pennsauken (13-2) and Cherry Hill East (6-2). Tori Kendal picked up the win against East, while also going 3-for-4 at the plate.

Highland was 0-2, including a 4-1 loss to Gloucester Catholic.

BOYS' TRACK

The Timber Creek track team wrapped up itsin dominating fashion, defeating Winslow 103-33 win over Winslow. Each team entered undefeated, but a close contest never materialized.

Timber Creek (5-0) got contributions up and down its lineup. Winning events were Greg Block (400), Cameron Allen (1600), Ryan Wolf (3200), Josh Gray (100 hurdles), Quanzell Lambert (shot put, discus), Lowe (javelin), Jon Payne (triple jump), Davis Rozyda (pole vault), Larry Russell (high jump) and the 4x400 relay team.

GIRLS’ TRACK

The Chargers were unable to capture a title of their own, falling to Winslow, 77-59. Sade Lavallias was a bright spot for Timber Creek, winning the 3200. The Chargers will look to rebound with a good showing at the Sectional Tournament.

BOYS' TENNIS

Timber Creek’s playoff run came to an end in the Group 3 semifinals with a 4-1 loss to No. 3 Lower Cape May. The Chargers—seeded sixth—got their lone point from Justin Quigley at No. 3 singles.

Timber Creek will look to put the finishing touches on an Olympic Conference title this week.

GOLF

Highland’s Ryan Magin and Triton’s Tyler Lathrop got a chance to compete against the best golfers in the area last week, by qualifying for their respective sectional tournaments.

THIS WEEK

- No. 10 Timber Creek travels to face No. 7 Oakcrest today in softball action.

- The Triton softball team hosts No. 9 Atlantic City today at 4 p.m.        

- The Timber Creek baseball team travels to take on Manchester Township in the Group 3 playoffs today.

- The Timber Creek boy’s tennis team looks to put the final touches on its championship season with contests against Seneca (Wednesday) and Paul VI (Thursday).

- Local track and field athletes compete at Sectionals on Friday.
