Black Horse Pike HS Sports Week in Review, Look Ahead

Big wins from the girls' soccer and football teams highlighted a busy sports week.

The fall season arrived in full force last week, with every team from Highland, Timber Creek and Triton seeing action.

It was a big week for the Timber Creek and Triton girls’ soccer and football teams, while Highland boys’ soccer team got the better of Delsea.

Below is a look back at the week that was and a look ahead to this week’s action:

BOYS' SOCCER

The Tartans shook off a 2-0 loss to Williamstown by earning a 2-2 tie with Delsea and a 2-0 win over Gloucester Tech. Joe Morano had both goals in the win and tallied three on the week.

The Chargers scored a 4-2 win over Paul VI Friday to wrap up a 1-1-1 week. Jeffrey Morgan led the charge, netting two goals and assisting on another. Sonimi Halliday and Alex Kourahanis also scored in the win.

Triton shared the wealth in a 7-0 win over Pennsauken as seven different players found the back of the net. James Barnett and Justen Carrero shared the shutout, while Barnett also had a goal.

GIRLS' SOCCER

Elise Pratt could not be denied last week. Pratt scored a hat trick to lead Timber Creek to a 3-1 win over Paul VI and followed that up by scoring the Chargers’ lone goal in a . Timber Creek stands at 3-0-1.

Erica Schules and Paige Bergman scored two goals each to help Triton score a wild 6-4 win over Winslow, in a game that featured seven goals in the first half. Triton kept the offense going in its next game, a 4-0 decision over Camden Catholic. Bergman scored twice more in the win.

The Tartans were 1-1 on the week, falling to Delsea, 1-0, before beating Woodstown, 2-1. Melissa Blevins and Katelyn Viscusi each scored in the win, while Courtney Scharinger made seven saves.

GIRLS' TENNIS

The Chargers had a dominating week at the net, going 3-0 against Paul VI, Cherry Hill West and Winslow. No. 2 and No. 3 singles players Aarynn Crawley and Haley Washington didn’t drop a set on the week, nor did the doubles teams of Brianna Evans/Amanda Riiff and Miranda Maples/Naomi Payne

FIELD HOCKEY

Casey Schindler made five saves to record her first shutout of the year in Timber Creek’s 0-0 tie with Cherry Hill West. The tie was a bright spot in a week that featured losses to Bishop Eustace and Paul VI.

Abigail Ryan and Devin Ryan were bright spots for Triton this week, each scoring a goal, but the Mustangs remain winless on the year.

It was a tough week for Highland, as it went 0-2, being outscored 20-0 in losses to Kingsway and Clearview.

FOOTBALL

A statement was made by the Timber Creek football team on Friday as it , 40-7.  Khalil Pierce led the offensive attack with 138 yards rushing and two touchdowns. The Chargers had their way on the ground, powering their way to more than 350 rushing yards.

Triton also put the South Jersey football community on notice with a 40-7 win over Kingsway. The Dragons entered the game fresh off a victory over Delsea, but left feeling the sting of the Mustangs' offense, which outscored the Dragons 30-0 in the second half. Friday, collecting an eye-popping 314 yards on the ground and three touchdowns.

Highland got an 8-yard touchdown run by Marcellus Santana in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough as it fell to Cumberland, 21-7. The Tartans are 0-2 on the young season.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Highland’s cross-country team finished third at Briarwood at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia on Saturday. Three of the team members finished in the top 20.

THIS WEEK

- A pair of local teams will bring their rackets to the court today as the Triton girls tennis team plays host to Timber Creek at 3:45 p.m. GT Patch is covering the match, so check back Tuesday morning.

- The Highland girls’ soccer team will face a couple of tough divisional contests against Williamstown (today) and Kingsway (Thursday).

- The Tartans’ boys’ soccer team will get a chance to play under the lights at home on Thursday against Kingsway at 7 p.m.

- The Triton field hockey team will have a chance to put a win on the board Wednesday when it hosts Winslow at 3:45 p.m.

- Timber Creek football will look to continue its dominant ways on Friday at Moorestown, while Highland football faces Kingsway home at 7 p.m.

- Triton football will also look to move to 3-0, but will have to wait an extra day as it travels to take on Pennsauken on Saturday at noon.
