Camden County College to Host 9/11 Events

The free presentations will be held Sept. 8 and Oct. 4.

Camden County College's Center for Civic Leadership and Responsibility will host two 9/11-related presentations in the coming weeks—the first just days before the 10th anniversary of the devastating terrorist attacks, the second a few weeks after it.

Both events are free and open to the public.

On Thursday, Sept. 8, Camden County College will welcome award-winning journalist Murray Weiss, author of The Man Who Warned America, a profile on former FBI counter-terrorism expert and Atlantic City native John O'Neill.

O'Neill, who had spent nearly a decade investigating bombings by religious extremists for the FBI, was killed on 9/11 when terrorists crashed two planes into the World Trade Center towers, where he had just begun working as security director.

O'Neill recognized Osama bin Laden as a threat to the United States long before other federal authorities did.

Weiss' discussion of his book is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m.

On Tuesday, Oct. 4, the college will screen a documentary profiling a Voorhees Township Muslim's efforts to see a mosque built in his community in the post-9/11 world.

Zia Rahman, who died in June 2009 at 64, succeeded in bringing a mosque to Voorhees by garnering support from a interfaith coalition.

Rahman's efforts, as well as the impact of the coalition, are profiled in Stephanie Daniels' Talking Through Walls: How the Struggle to Build a Mosque Unites a Community.

Following the hour-long film's screening, which is slated to begin at 7 p.m., Daniels, Rahman's widow, Zahida Rahman, and interfaith coalition members interfaith coalition members Father Joseph Wallace, Alan Respler, Lori Volpe, and George Bouchey will be avaiable for a panel discussion and question-and-answer session.

Both events will be held in Civic Hall in the college's Connector Building. The school recommends each presentation as a development opportunity for area teachers.
