Campfire for Reading at Erial Elementary

The event aims to encourage family reading.

Erial Elementary School principal Timothy Trow submitted the following press release to Gloucester Township Patch regarding the school's recent Campfire Reading Night:

On the evening of Oct. 23, Erial Elementary welcomed more than 100 families of kindergarten through second-grade students back for a Campfire Reading Night. Students and parents were treated to reading activities, crafts, and snacks focused on a camping theme.

Students enjoyed cuddling with parents in the elaborately designed campground in the gym after learning how to select a “just right” book from the free books distributed to students at the event. Teachers also demonstrated the techniques they use to effectively introduce and read books with students.

Parents were encouraged to use these strategies when they read with their children at home. The fun culminated with crafts and trail mix snacks.

The event was planned by committee chair Elise Fulginiti and more than 20 teachers at the school. It is part of a school-wide effort to improve student reading skills through collaboration with parents and increasing the amount of time students read.
