Chews School Students Donate $1K+ to Relay for Life

Chews Elementary School students brought in more than $1,200 in coins one week last month.

Chews Elementary School students raided their piggy banks last month to make sure they came through in a big way for Gloucester Township Relay for Life.

A group of Chews students presented former Chews student and "Scouting for a Cure" team member Taylor Coyle, who is a cancer survivor, with a check for $1,255.42 prior to the event's opening ceremonies Saturday morning.

The all-day relay-style walk in support of the American Cancer Society was held at Lt. Col. Samuel M. Siler Veterans Memorial Park. It marked the third consecutive year Gloucester Township has hosted a Relay for Life event.

The Chews students raised the money during a Relay Recess project in May.

Chews Elementary life skills teacher Carolyn Wick and student aide Theresa Marrama encouraged students to bring in coins for one week, during which the students also walked during their recess periods to show their commitment to fight back against cancer and raise awareness of the importance of early detection and healthy living, according to Gloucester Township Relay for Life chairwoman Tracey Trotto.
