Holiday Basketball Tournament Roundup

The Highland boys' and girls' basketball teams were in action Tuesday. Timber Creek hits the hardwood today.

Marvin Ayi-Bamah scored a team-high 11 points, but it wasn’t enough to keep Highland from falling to Lenape, 54-30, at the Lenape Holiday Showcase.

Highland came out of the gates strong, scoring 13 points in the first quarter. The Tartans trailed by three after the first period, but managed just 17 points the rest of the way, including just eight in the second half, allowing Lenape to pull away. Kerron Johnson and Tim Brown scored eight and seven points, respectively.

“We actually came out and played a pretty good first half,” said Highland coach Andrew Thies. “Then we only scored eight points in the second half. I don’t know how many teams you are going to beat scoring eight points in the second half.”

Highland will be back in action Thursday against Haddonfield. The Tartans will likely need a much stronger offensive effort as the Bulldawgs have topped 70 points in three of four games, and surpassed 90 once.

Timber Creek, meanwhile, competes tonight in the Atkinson Tournament at Gloucester County College. The Chargers are scheduled to take on Paulsboro, out of the Colonial Conference. The Red Raiders should prove to be a tough adversary for the Chargers (0-2). They are 2-0 and are averaging 68 points a game. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.

Seven hours earlier the Timber Creek girls’ basketball team (0-2) will compete at GCC against Glassboro. The Bulldogs (2-1) play out of the Tri-County League and have won two straight.

Tuesday proved to be a heartbreaker for the Highland girls’ basketball team, which dropped to 0-4 after a 42-40 double-overtime loss to Pennsauken in the Clayton Holiday Tournament.

“We made some mistakes, but we also did a nice job of taking advantage of the mistakes they made,” said Highland girls' hoops coach John Senft. “We can’t let opportunities like that slip away.”

The Tartans had to go deep into the bench as two players fouled out, while three other players picked up four fouls. Ayanna Williams had a breakout game with 16 points. The Tartans will look to get their first win of the season Thursday against Gateway at 1 p.m.
