Lady Chargers Overpower Winslow for 12th Win

Jasmine Martin scores 30 points for Timber Creek as the Lady Chargers win their fourth in a row.

When the senior guard left the court with three minutes left in the game, Jasmine Martin had more than earned the right to watch the rest of the game from the bench.

The Lady Chargers (12-4) were well on their way to their fourth victory in a row as they dispatched Winslow Township, 69-48, behind Martin's 30 points.

Martin's performance was enough to make her coach beam.

"She was just relentless today," coach Donna Clark said. "She got hot and was just feeling it."

Martin's presence was overwhelming for the 7-12 Eagles.  She got her outside shot going early, connecting on three from behind the arc. As her coach pointed out, she also was a force off the glass, collecting a game-high 13 rebounds. She also helped put the game on ice when her team needed her to step up.

Coming out of the half, with the Eagles only trailing by five, it looked like Timber Creek was in danger of letting Winslow back into the game. Clark had warned of her team's habit to allow the opposition to hang around too long. Despite never relinquishing the lead, Timber Creek was in danger of doing just that.

This time, the Chargers found another gear, and began to get some separation.

The Chargers' defense, which had been prone to breakdowns after the half, played the way their coach had been hoping to see.

"They did good in adjusting to what we needed to do," Clark said about her girls' ability to put the game away before the final frame.

Timber Creek's zone defense had held up enough to force the Eagles into taking low-percentage shots as Timber Creek forced the ball outside.

Martin's eleven points in the third quarter outscored Winslow's team output (8 points) for the quarter. By the beginning of the fourth, Timber Creek had built a 16-point advantage.

It was the second lopsided victory in a row for the Chargers, who handled Group 1 Florence Township on Monday, 72-30, in a opening round matchup for the South Jersey Ladies Invitational Basketball Tournament. Martin scored 21 and senior Alexis Riff added 15 points in the win over Florence.

Timber Creek next travels to Cherry Hill High School West on Thursday, with tip scheduled for 3:45 p.m. The team then fills out its week with a home appointment against Cherokee on Friday before meeting Kingsway again in the South Jersey Ladies Invitational final.

The Chargers lost to Kingsway in the final of the James G. Atkinson Tournament on Dec. 29, 45-42.
