Local Wrestlers Survive Day One of District 30 Tournament

The 120-poubd weight class is shaping up to feature a pair of local showdowns.

The first day of the NJSIAA District 30 Wrestling Tournament is all about survival and a host of Black Horse Pike Regional School District  wrestlers did exactly that. There were no major upsets in  Friday’s quarterfinals at Overbrook High School, as Timber Creek sent nine wrestlers seeded in the top-three through to the semifinals.

The action is set to get going today at 11 a.m., with the semifinals, followed by consolations and finals. The top three wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the Region 8 Tournament, which begins Tuesday.

The weight class that could be especially intriguing for local wrestling fans comes at 120 pounds, where Timber Creek, Highland and Triton will each have a competitor fighting for a right to become a district champion. No. 3 seed Brian Ceaser, of Highland will take on No. 2 Chris Bucceroni, of Triton in one semifinal, while No. 1 and defending district champion Rickey Carter competes in another semifinal.

Highland’s Troy Warren nearly had the upset of the tournament. As a No. 7 seed he took No. 2 seed Emmanuel Mitchell (Winslow) to the limit, getting back points twice, before eventually falling, 10-9.

Notable wrestlers still alive to compete for a title are Timber Creek’s John Amato (106), Ricky Carter (120), Brandon Keller (132), Dom Ruggierrio (145), Bryce Shade (152) and Robert Shade (170), each of whom earned No. 1 seeds.

No. 1 seed Martell Harrison and No. 2 seed Ryan Wade will compete for Highland and Anthony Irvin (152) joins Bucceroni as No. 2 seeds still in contention for Triton.

Check back later tonight and Sunday to find out how many District 30 champions the local schools produced.
