Longtime Township BOE Member Announces Resignation

Andrew Lalli decided to step down from the Gloucester Township school board less than a week after board elections.

Andrew Lalli, a member of the Gloucester Township Board of Education for the past 33 years, announced his resignation Monday at a board work session. It takes effect at the end of this month.

The announcement came a week after a school board election in which two of three incumbent members were reelected. The exception was board President William Collins, who finished fourth among six candidates in a race for three seats, behind newcomer Dominic Gagliardi.

When a member resigns, a board typically appoints someone to fill the remaining term before facing an election. Lalli had an angry reaction after the meeting when asked why he didn't resign before the election.

"Are you serious?" he said to a reporter, shaking and visibly angry. "Why would I do that? Are you trying to telling me I should have resigned then? No, I didn't."

Lalli said he was moving out of the township and that's why he resigned.

The time remaining in his term was not immediately clear. The board went into a closed-door executive session immediately after the work session ended.
