BHPRSD Sports Week in Review, Look Ahead

A look back at last week's athletic action and a look ahead to this week's schedule.

Last week saw the and  high school boys’ soccer teams each score a pair of victories to build their playoff resumes. The Chargers and Mustangs also picked up wins on the gridiron, while the Highland boys’ cross country team continued its winning ways.

Below is a look back at the week that was and a peak ahead to this week’s sports schedule.

FOOTBALL

Running back and two touchdowns including a 96-yard sprint to help Triton pull out a 29-0 win over Cumberland. The defense recorded its second win of the season as the Mustangs improved to 3-1.

Timber Creek started slow against Kingsway Friday night, but found its rhythm in the second half and over the Dragons. Khalil Pierce ran for 125 yards as the Chargers improved to 4-0.

The losing streak reached 17 games for Highland (0-4) as it was no match for Delsea in a 48-8 loss.

BOYS' SOCCER

The Triton boys’ soccer team landed its signature win of the season, upsetting Seneca, 3-0. Seneca entered the game as the No. 5 ranked team in South Jersey according to the Courier-Post, but was no match for the Mustangs. Chris Welker, Dylan Myler and Sam Cyliax all netted goals. The Mustangs followed that victory up with a 1-0 victory over Delsea thanks to a converted penalty kick by Myler in overtime. James Barnett made eight saves to record his third straight shutout.

Timber Creek also had a big week, defeating Seneca, 2-0, before filling up the nets in . Giuseppe DeLuca and Jeffrey Morgan scored twice against Camden Catholic as the Chargers improved to 5-1-1.

Highland bounced back from a 2-1 loss to Cumberland with a 5-0 win over Penns Grove.

GIRLS' SOCCER

The Chargers continued to rack of victories, downing Camden Catholic, 6-2, and Cherry Hill West, 2-0. Olivia McEachern and Elise Pratt each scored while Christiana Ogunsani made 10 saves in the win over Cherry Hill West.

Triton took down Highland, 2-0, in a local showdown on Friday. Senior forward Abi Fakolujo opened the scoring on an assist from Mandi Noll 18 minutes into game, and junior midfielder Alexis Ayala scored five minutes later. Ang Martorano had 10 saves to earn her second shutout.

Goals did not come easy for the Tartans last week, as they were outscored 5-0 in a pair off losses.

FIELD HOCKEY

Abigail Ryan scored a hat trick as Triton landed its first win of the season, a 6-0 victory over Winslow. The Mustangs also got two goals from Gina Ayusa and a goal each from Destiny Garey and Allison Nye.

Timber Creek went 1-1 last week, getting a 5-1 win over Winslow. Jessie Kinzler and Jennifer O’Neill each scored a pair to help the Chargers improve to 2-5-1.

The Tartans were unable to find their first win of the season, losing a pair of games, including a 4-1 decision to GCIT.

GIRLS' TENNIS

Rains kept last week’s tennis action to a minimum. Triton got two matches in, losing to Bishop Eustace, 5-0, but rebounding with a 4-1 win over Winslow. Timber Creek fell to Lenape, 4-1.

CROSS-COUNTRY

The Highland boys’ team continued its winning ways, defeating Delsea 19-42. Keinan Dougherty was the overall winner, crossing the line at 19:11. Jamire Roberts and Joe Benckert placed third and fourth, respectively.

The Highland girls' team lost 44-17 to Delsea. Chrisi Bush was the top Tartans’ finisher, placing fourth at 23:26.

THIS WEEK

- The Triton football team has a big matchup on Friday with Delsea. The Crusaders have won two games in a row to get back in the playoff hunt, while the Mustangs are coming off their second shutout of the season. Highland returns home on Friday and will take on Clearview. Timber Creek is on its bye week.

- The Timber Creek girls’ tennis team will open playoff action on Thursday with an opponent to be determined.

- The Triton boys’ soccer team will be busy with three games this week, including back-to-back home games against Shawnee and Eastern on Wednesday and Thursday.

- The Chargers girls’ soccer team faces a tough divisional test against Paul VI on Wednesday at home at 3:45.
