BHPRSD Sports: Week in Review, Sneak Peek

The basketball playoffs get going this week.

Wrestling took the spotlight last week as four Timber Creek grapplers brought home championship medals from the Region 8 Tournament at Egg Harbor Township High School, while two other Chargers earned a spot in this week’s State Tournament.

The past seven days also provided five basketball teams their final opportunities to shape up for the playoffs, which start today.

Below is a look back at the week that was in high school athletics, as well as a glimpse at next week’s schedule.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

and hit the hardwood on Tuesday searching for big upsets in the state playoffs. The Mustangs are a No. 12 seed in Group 4 and will travel to face No. 5 Clearview. The Pioneers (15-7) did not fare well down the stretch, winning just two of their final five games. The gap between these teams may not be as big as the seeds indicate, being that the teams play in different conferences. The only common opponent was Schalick, with Triton losing 80-64 and Clearview losing 80-73.

Triton is not entering the playoffs the way it would have liked, having dropped its last four games.

Timber Creek will be looking for a monumental upset in Group 3 as the No. 16-seeded Chargers travel to face No.1 Lacey. Playing out of the Shore Conference, Lacey is 19-3. The team wins on the back of its defense. Lacey only averages around 50 points a game, but has held 15 opponents under 40 points on the season.

Timber Creek will need to play much better than it has over the final month of the season. The Chargers have dropped 10 of 11, including games to Shawnee and Lenape last week.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Timber Creek—the highest seed among Black Horse Pike Regional teams—enters the Group 3 Tournament as a No. 9 seed and will take on No. 8 Lower Cape May today at 5 p.m. The Chargers are limping into the playoffs, losers of five of six. Timber Creek lost to Shawnee and Seneca last week as standout freshman Brittany Martin was held to a combined seven points. Lower (13-12) has gone in the other direction, winning four of six down the stretch.

(7-16) also hits the road today as the No. 14-seeded Tartans take on No. 3 Seneca today at 6 p.m. Seneca (21-4) had an eight-game winning streak snapped last week in a 60-51 loss to Delran.

Triton has a major mountain to climb on Tuesday when the No. 16-seeded Mustangs take on No. 1 Shawnee. A one-point loss to Moorestown last week snapped an 18-game winning streak for Shawnee (22-3). The Mustangs have lost seven straight, including defeats to Lenape and Pennsauken last week.

WRESTLING

Timber Creek brought home plenty of hardware over the weekend as four Chargers claimed . Brandon Keller grabbed his third Region 8 title, while Bryce Shade, Robert Shade and John Amato each claimed their first. saw the biggest comeback of the championship round as he turned a 7-1 deficit into a victory by pin. The foursome of Timber Creek wrestlers will be joined by Ricky Carter and Dom Ruggerio at the State Tournament, which begins Friday.

THIS WEEK

- The Timber Creek girls’ hoops team takes on Lower Cape May today at 5 p.m.

- The Highland girls’ basketball team takes on Seneca today at 6 p.m.

- The Triton girls’ basketball team takes on Shawnee Tuesday at 5 p.m.

- The Timber Creek boys' hoops team hits the road to face Lacey Tuesday at 7 p.m.

- The Triton boys' basketball team hits the road to take on Clearview Tuesday at 7 p.m.

- The three-day State Wrestling Tournament begins Friday and continues through the weekend in Atlantic City.
