Tartans' Maine, Chargers' Gray Win Sectional Titles

Steve Maine won the 3200, while Josh Gray captured the triple jump this weekend at Egg Harbor Township.

It was a standout weekend for the Timber Creek High School boys’ track team, which had big performances all over the track and field at the NJSIAA Group 3 Sectionals. Highland also had a few standouts in Group 3, while Triton had a male and female advance to next week’s State Championships.

The weekend’s biggest winners were ’s Josh Gray and Highland’s Steve Maine, who each won a Sectional championship. Gray—who had been battling leg injuries the second-half of the season—won the triple jump with a leap of 46-4.5. Gray will also be competing in the 110 hurdles at states after placing third this weekend.

Maine’s performance was not a surprise as he has been dominant all season in the distance events. He was never even challenged in the 3200, as his time of 9:37.68 was 10 seconds faster than Delsea’s Nick Costello, who placed second.

Maine, who is also the Tartans’ top cross country runner—will also compete in the 1600 at states after his sixth-place finish in the event on Friday. Teammate Stephen Lafferty will join Main after placing fifth in the 3200.

Timber Creek’s Jamaad Muse didn’t win a title, but he still had a strong weekend. Muse was second the 200 in 21.78 and added a second-place finish in the 100, crossing the line in 10.92. Muse was the top qualifier in the 200 and nearly took home the title. He finished just .09 behind Oakcrest’s Fabian Santiago.

Timber Creek’s Kevin Potter also had a big day, finishing third in the 110 hurdles and third in the long jump.

Quanzell Lambert was able to bounce back from a tough day Friday in the shot put, to grab a second-place finish in the discus, Saturday. Lambert was stuck with a “no distance” in the shot after faulting on all of his attempts, but responded with a 152-6 in the discus. Lambert also took sixth in the javelin.

Lambert’s throwing teammate Schalor Blackshear also punched his ticket to states in the discus. finishing fifth with a throw of 140-09.

Also qualifying for states was Timber Creek’s Greg Black was (fifth, 400), Calvin Lowe (third, javelin), Jarel Ferren (third, triple jump); Highland’s Neil Rizzo (fifth, pole vault), Kerron Johnson (fifth, triple jump), Ahmad Randal (fourth, discus); and Triton’s Kyle Kirschner (fifth, Group 4 javelin).

On the girls’ side Triton’s Deja Bullock kept her standout season going, by scoring a second-place finish in the high jump. Bullock’s jump of 5-4 tied for the highest mark reached in Group 4, but she was awarded second place because Southern’s Dana Ohlson was able to clear the height in fewer attempts.

Timber Creek junior Bre'shae Pierce qualified for states in a trio of events. On the track, Pierce earned a second-place result in the 400, and a fifth-place finish in the 800. Pierce then took her talents to the long jump pit where her leap of 17-6 was good enough for third place.

Meanwhile, Timber Creek’s Alicia Terrell advanced in two events, finishing third in the 100 hurdles and fourth in the high jump.

Also qualifying was Timber Creek’s Kelsey Kohlepp (second, discus), Janelle Shipotofsky (sixth, 3200), Daijah Davis (third, 400 hurdles); and Triton’s Brook Whitmire (fourth, pole vault).
