Chargers Find Shootout Success

The Timber Creek boys' soccer team advanced to the SJ Group III semis with a win over Moorestown on penalty kicks Friday.

On a squad as offensively gifted as the boys’ soccer team, goalie Andrew Garcia can often go unnoticed.

However, when the playoffs roll around, the pressure on goaltenders intensifies and the special goalies separate themselves from the pack.

On Friday, Garcia showed how valuable an asset he is, saving the Chargers' season with two penalty-kick stops against Moorestown to give Timber Creek a spot in the NJSIAA South Jersey Group III semifinals.

As was the case with the Chargers’ top-seeded girls' soccer team on Thursday, 100 minutes of soccer was not enough to separate No. 1 Timber Creek and No. 8 Moorestown. The game was tied 1-1 after regulation and two periods of overtime.

Alex Kourahanis, Jeffrey Morgan and Sonimi Halladay each connected on their penalties and Garcia clinched the game with a save against Moorestown’s fourth shooter—his second save of the shootout.

Giuseppe DeLuca had the Chargers’ lone goal in regulation.

Timber Creek will not be able to bask in the dramatic victory for long, as it has a major showdown Saturday. The Charges face Cherokee in the finals of the South Jersey Soccer Coaches Association Tournament at Eastern at 6 p.m.

The Chargers will then return to Group III action on Tuesday, when they host No. 5 Seneca.
