Timber Creek Tripped Up by Lenape

Mikal Demby scores 17 in the loss as the Chargers fall to 7-16.

MOUNT LAUREL — The Timber Creek boys' basketball team finished the regular season on Saturday afternoon with a visit to the 21-5 Lenape Indians. It seemed fitting for the Chargers (7-16) as nothing has really come easily for this team throughout this trying season.

Nothing has gone according to plan for these boys. They have had winter storms erase games from the early part of the schedule. Their schedule made them face off against some of Camden County's more feared teams to start the season. They have had to over come growing pains, players playing out of position and injury.

Their visit to Lenape Regional High School on Saturday ended in a 63-44 loss to the Indians. The Chargers fought, worked and tried to capitalize on a Lenape team that didn't look quite like they were interested in playing a Saturday matinee.

Lenape struggled to find the handle during the first half; leaving the door open for the Chargers to do what they do best: run the floor.  Mikal Demby once again led the Chargers with 17 points, most of which came off the break.

As the Indians were able to make adjustments and settle down their offense, they were also able to settle down the Chargers. Timber Creek struggled to set up any offense for the rest of the day.

"We are still working on the same things we have been all year,"  Charger coach William Fahy said with his eye on the Tuesday playoff game against Manchester. "We just need a little consistency."

Against Lenape, the Chargers played physically. DaJaun Drennon provided valuable minutes off the bench underneath. Alongside senior forward D.J. Dunham, the two forced the Lenape shooters to opt for outside shots.

The Chargers had their hands full with the Indians, who were led by Josh Nace and his 23 points.

The loss was their fourth in a row and ended the regular season for Timber Creek on a down note.

Despite the losing record, the Timber Creek Chargers have qualified for the Group III playoffs. While expectations are tempered by the team's performance down the stretch, the Chargers are about to get Sameen Swint and T.J. LaScala back from injury.

Timber Creek plays next in the first round of the Group III playoffs on Tuesday as they visit Manchester Township at 6 p.m.
