Triton Field Hockey Eliminated from Playoffs

A season of improvement came to a close against Millville on Wednesday.

The playoffs came and went for the Triton Regional High School field hockey team Wednesday night, as the No. 10 Mustangs fell to No. 7 Millville, 5-0, in the first round of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group III playoffs.

The loss brings to a close a season that saw the Mustangs improve from three wins in 2010 to six wins this year.

“We are a small team, and what we lack in skill we make up with tenacity, effort, and heart,” said Triton head coach Cherie McNellis. “We came across a team that was at a little higher skill level. We had some chances and we had a lot of corners, but just couldn’t get it together.”

McNellis said the team came out a little flat, but picked up its play as the game went on. The Mustangs generated nine corners and 13 shots, but were unable to solve Millville goalie Lauren Robinson.

The Thunderbolts’ Corrine Etter scored seven minutes apart midway through the first half and Carley Mease added a pair of goals in the second half to put the game away.

Millville will face No. 2 Shawnee, which received a first-round bye.

Despite the early playoff exit, Triton’s season can be viewed a success. The Mustangs doubled their win total from a year ago and were much more competitive in their losses in finishing 6-9-1. The team is loaded with juniors, meaning the squad will enter next season with playoff experience now under its belt.

“Overall, I am very pleased (with the season),” McNellis said. “I have a lot of girls that don’t come from a hockey background and just started playing as freshmen, so we are going against people playing for years and years. All we can do is keep building from here. We doubled up from last year and hopefully we will double up again next year.”

Reminder: Timber Creek field hockey will be in action Saturday when the No. 8 Chargers host No. 9 Pinelands in a Group III first-round contest at 10 a.m.
