Moorestown Scores Big Win Over Highland

Coach Senft concerned by Lady Tartans' effort as playoffs approach.

MOORESTOWN—Although a young Moorestown girls’ basketball team has spent most of its season retooling for the future, it has remained competitive, earning a postseason birth behind solid defense and frontcourt play.

One of the key cogs to that successful frontcourt, Marisa Randazzo, paced the Lady Quakers (8-15) with 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead her team over Highland 49-29 on Senior Night. The other, Moorestown’s lone senior, Kellen McGinley, added 13 points in the win.

“They worked really hard underneath the net and they had a ton of second-chance points,” said Highland coach J.W. Senft. “They really battled for rebounds and were efficient scorers.”

The game was tight early on as Highland (10-13) cut Moorestown’s lead to 23-21 with three minutes to go in the first half, but failed to get any closer as the Lady Quakers took a 28-21 lead into the half.

That’s when Randazzo, who scored 10 points in a quarter that saw Moorestown outscore the Lady Tartans 16-2 and prompted Senft to remove many of his starters from the game.

“I felt like our effort was lacking,” he said. “It was a situation where I thought we needed to up our effort and send a message.”

The lopsided score was a bit surprising to Senft, given that on paper, it appeared Highland, which had won three of its last four entering the game, was hitting its stride as the postseason approaches next week.

“If we came out and had been able to play the way we have at times, it should at the very least been a much more competitive game,” he said. “They are a good, young team, that is very well-coached, but I thought we were suited to be very competitive in this game.”

Highland and Moorestown each have one remaining game prior to the South Jersey Group III playoffs, which begin March 1.

Highland (No. 12 seed) will travel to Seneca (No. 5) in the opening round of the South while Moorestown (No. 14) will head to Pemberton (No. 3) in the South Jersey Group III playoffs.
