Timber Creek Downs Quakers to Remain Undefeated

Despite turnovers, the Chargers triumph over the Moorestown Quakers, 30-19, on Friday night.

With heavy rains producing a sloppy field turnovers were imminent in Friday’s West Jersey Football League contest between Timber Creek High School and Moorestown.

It was what the offenses did with those extra opportunities provided by the defense that determined this battle between a pair of team that entered undefeated.

Moorestown forced Timber Creek into three turnovers, but couldn’t turn them into a single point while the Chargers made the most of their opportunities in a 30-19 victory Friday night.

“Not a good game by us,” Moorestown head coach Russ Horton said. “An onside kick (recovery), fumble recovery, and an interception in the first half, and we got zero points out of it. If you get the turnovers, you’ve got to score.”

Moorestown (2-1) had three turnovers themselves, largely due to a soggy field with on-and-off rain throughout the game, causing a rather slippery football.

Even with the failure to convert turnovers into points on Moorestown’s part, the Quakers still walked into the locker room with a 13-12 lead at halftime. However, in the third quarter Timber Creek senior quarterback Calvin Lowe took over.

Lowe ran for two touchdowns in the third quarter to give the Chargers a 24-13 lead. He credited the player upfront with creating holes for him to run through.

“It was the offensive line,” Lowe said. “I talked to them at halftime and I told them ‘We’ve got to do this.’ They went out for me, and I went out for them.”

The game wasn’t put away until late in the fourth quarter, when running back Eric Church ran 15 yards for a touchdown on a fourth down play for the Chargers. The score gave expanded Timber Creeks lead from five to 11 with just 2:16 remaining in the fourth quarter.

That extra breathing room was a relief to Timber Creek head coach Rob Hinson, who knew that Moorestown could have come back with a touchdown at any time.

“They’ve got four or five guys that can score pretty much anytime they touch the ball,” Hinson said. “We just wanted to make sure that we kept everything in front and not give up the big play.”

Hinson praised the play of Lowe, as he essentially put the team on his back in the second half, especially in the third quarter.

“Calvin (Lowe) played great,” Hinson said. “He came out and played well for us. As an overall team leader, he did a great job for us.”

While this is a dent in the Moorestown armor, Horton sees this as an opportunity for the Quakers to learn about themselves.

“You learn from your losses,” he said. “I don’t think you really learn a lot from your wins.”
