Timber Creek's Webb Bucks Penn State

The four-star defensive lineman recruit verbally committed to North Carolina on Saturday.

Timber Creek defensive tackle Greg Webb on Saturday became the first Class of 2013 recruit to back out of his commitment to Penn State following the Jerry Sandusky conviction and the release of the damaging Freeh Report.

Webb, regarded by rivals.com as a four-star, top defensive recruit in the Class of 2013, now plans to attend the University of North Carolina, according to media reports.

Timber Creek head coach Rob Hinson told the Philadelphia Inquirer Webb's decision to de-commit from Penn State was not about the Sandusky scandal.

"The timing is funny but it really wasn't about that," Hinson told the Inquirer, indicating the decision was more about Webb's comfort with North Carolina, his desire to play college ball with fellow Timber Creek defensive lineman Dajuan Drennon, and his family's pending move to the South.

Drennon also committed to North Carolina on Saturday.

Sandusky, the long-time defensive coordinator at Penn State, was convicted June 22 of sexually abusing 10 boys. Several of the assaults occurred in the school's football facilities.

The Freeh Report—the findings of an investigation conducted by former FBI director Louis Freeh, who was hired Penn State—revealed that top-level university officials, including Hall of Fame head coach Joe Paterno, helped to cover up allegations against Sandusky dating back to 1998.

The NCAA is expected to announce unprecedented penalties against Penn State as a result of the scandal Monday morning, including loss of scholarships, a bowl-game ban and fines rumored to be in the neighborhood of $60 million.

Rivals.com rates Webb as the seventh best defensive tackle in the nation and the third best overall recruit in New Jersey.

Webb was an integral part of a defense that led Timber Creek to the 2011 South Jersey Group 3 title. The Chargers went 12-0, completing the championship run with a 33-7 win over Hammonton.
