Timber Creek, Triton Pull off Upsets in Field Hockey Playoffs

They scored first round upsets, but fell in the quarterfinals. We've also got updates on football and soccer.

The Timber Creek and Triton high school field hockey teams pulled off upsets in the first round of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 3 playoffs this week, according to nj.com.

No. 9 Timber Creek pulled off a 3-1 upset at No. 8 Seneca. Jordan Virgillo scored all three goals. Grace Mullee and Casey Wagner each had an assist. Goalie Zhane Austin made eight saves.

Timber Creek was shut out in the quarterfinals, however, falling to No. 1 Kingsway, 4-0, on  Friday. Timber Creek finished the season with a record of 5-11-3.

No. 10 Triton scored a 1-0 upset of No. 7 Lacey in the first round. Gina Ayusa scored the game-winner, with an assist from Mackenzie Lafferty. Goalie Krista Little made 22 saves.

Triton also fell in the quarterfinals, dropping a 2-1 decision to No. 2 seed Mainland on Friday. Triton finished the season with a record of 6-12-2.

No. 11 Highland didn’t have the same fortune, as it fell in a tight first round contest. Highland fell to No. 6 Pinelands, 1-0, in the first round of the South Jersey Group 3 playoffs.

The Pinelands’ game-winning goal came in the second half. Highland goalie Cordelia Love made 17 saves. Highland finished the season with a 4-7 record.

Football:

Paul VI 48, Triton 6: Triton took a 6-0 lead, but Paul VI took over shortly thereafter.

Brandon Newisky recovered a Paul VI fumble in their own end zone to give Triton the first score of the game.

Paul VI tied the game with Lonnie Moore's 6-yard touchdown run, the first of five rushing touchdowns for Paul VI. They took the lead for good on a 5-yard run by Christopher Randle, all in the first quarter.

Triton fell to 2-5, and hosts Winslow Friday night, 7 p.m.

Delsea 42, Highland 0: Highland fell to 3-5 with the loss. The Tartans visit Penns Grove on Friday in the final game before the cutoff date. They wrap the season up the following game, against an opponent to be determined.

Boys' soccer

Glassboro 5, Highland 2: Tommy Cuffari and Gavin Meyler scored for Highland. Goalie Zach Greenwood made nine saves in the loss. 

Schalick 1, Highland 0: Shane Martin scored the game-winning goal in the first half.

Delsea 6, Triton 2: Luchiano Rocca and Christian Van Auken scored for Triton, who fell behind 3-0 at halftime. 

Timber Creek 6, Bishop Eustace 0: Alex Kourahanis led the way with three goals. Joe Burton, Steve Ersing and Matthew Hershey also found the back of the net. Jay Jennings and Justin Smith split time in goal, each making two saves to preserve the shutout.

Timber Creek 4, Cherry Hill West 2: Alex Kourahanis netted his second straight hat trick. Steve Karakitisios added the other goal. Jay Jennings and Justin Smith split time in goal, making a total of four saves.

Girls' soccer:

Highland 3, Glassboro 2: Lauren Hoelke led the way with a pair of goals. Gianna DiPierro had a goal and an assist.

Highland 4, Schalick 1: Lauren Hoelke’s hat trick led Highland to the Diamond Division title. She had three goals and an assist. Morgan Ruth added a goal, and Gianna DiPierro had an assist. 

Triton 6, Haddon Heights 1: Triton jumped out to a 4-1 halftime lead.

Paige Bergman led the way with two goals and two assists. Others finding the back of the net included Rebecca Dolhansky, Michaella Paradiso, Erin Taylor and Gabi Urban.

Timber Creek 2, Bishop Eustace 0: Staci Bell and Shannon Farrell each scored in the tight victory. Farrell, Brianna Magana and Ellie Palmer each had an assist.

Goalie Jenna Tolen made 11 saves in the shutout.
