Timber Creek Wrestler Wins Tournament Title; Highland Wrestling Off to 3-0 Start

Highland defeated Lenape, Pitman and Palmyra. Timber Creek's John Amato won the 126-pound title at the Robin Leff Invitational.

John Amato captured the 126 pound championship for Timber Creek High School at the Robin Leff Invitational on Saturday, according to nj.com.

Amato captured the crown with a 4-2 decision over Kingsway’s Stanley Atkinson in the final. Amato was 34-5 last season, with 19 wins coming by pinfall.

The Highland wrestling team is off to a 3-0 start with wins over Lenape, Pitman and Palmyra during a tri-meet over the weekend, according to box scores posted on nj.com.

Highland defeated Lenape, 64-9; Pitman, 65-6; and Palmyra, 71-3.

The Tartans scored two technical falls in the win over Lenape, including Dillon Prendergast’s 19-3 win over Joe Yecco at 120 and Sheldon Morris’s 20-5 win over Blaise Nardelli at 160.

They also received pinfall victories from Josh Clark (126), Chris Madgey (132), Mikal Jenkins (138), Zach McCafferty (152), George Duddy (195) and Andrew Baez (heavyweight).

Against Pitman, Lucas Siegfried scored a technical fall over Christian Klecz, 24-6.

Josh Clark (126), McCafferty, Morris and Tom Nolan (170) picked up pinfall wins for the Tartans.

Siegfried, Clark, Madgey, Nick Wade (145), McCafferty, Morris, Jordan Warren (182), and Duddy delivered pinfall wins for Highland in the shellacking of Palmyra.

Boys’ basketball

Sterling started the season 0-2 following losses to Collingswood and Northwest Prep.

The Panthers edged the Knights, 54-52, according to nj.com.

Sterling jumped out to a 13-11 first quarter lead and extended that lead to 26-20 at halftime.

The Panthers cut into that lead in the third quarter, and then they outscored Sterling, 22-16 in the final stanza to pull away with the victory.

Jarod Mullica led the way for Sterling with 23 points.

Northwest Prep dropped the Knights to 0-2 with a 54-47 defeat on Saturday. Devon Tuten led the way for Sterling with 23 points, followed by Jarod Mullica, with 12.

Sterling hosts Willingboro on Friday.

Highland dropped its opener at Schalick, 85-55, on Friday night, according to nj.com. Highland is 0-1 and was set to play Cherry Hill East on Monday.

Girls' basketball

It was a low-scoring affair at the start, but the Highland High School girls’ basketball team caught fire in the second half and pulled away for a 46-24 win over Schalick in the season opener Friday night, according to nj.com.

K’yana Brown led the way with 12 points, followed by Devon Graf with 10.

After one quarter, Highland held an 8-1 lead, and at halftime, that lead stretched to 17-8.

Each team drastically increased their outputs in the third quarter, when Highland outscored Schalick, 17-10. A 12-6 final stanza put they win in the books for the Tartans.

Highland is 1-0 and visits Egg Harbor Township on Friday.
