Gloucester Twp. Heat Wave, Day 3

Temperatures and humidity this intense can turn deadly. Get the forecast and the nearest cooling centers in Gloucester Township.

Any way you slice it, being outside this week is going to feel gross as South Jersey prepares for temperatures in the high 90s through Saturday.

The National Weather Service already issued an excessive heat warning for South Jersey, until Wednesday at 8 p.m. With Thursday and Friday temperatures forecasted at 99 and 97, respectively, it’s a good bet the excessive heat warning will be extended.

Here’s what you can look forward to weather-wise this week, according to the National Weather Service and the Weather Channel:

Saturday: high of 95, 30 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms

The heat waves “breaks,” if 88 degrees is truly breaking the heat, on Sunday, forecasters predict.

Those high temperatures are all likely to feel much hotter as the heat index will make it seem like it’s in the 100s for several days. “The excessive heat will create dangerous conditions, especially for those working in the sun or living in non-air conditioned homes,” the National Weather Service warns. “The most strongly affected are young children and also adults over 50. Leaving anyone, including pets and children, in non-air conditioned cars during the day is very dangerous and quickly can become fatal.”

Every Camden County town has at least one cooling center. Gloucester Township’s are at the municipal building on Chews Landing Road and the Hider Lane Senior Center between Little Gloucester and Chews Landing roads.

Remember to check on elderly and ill relatives and neighbors, drink plenty of extra water, wear light-colored clothing and stay in air-conditioning when possible.

If you’re experiencing lack of energy, appetite loss, light-headedness, faintness or nausea, you may be experiencing the onset of a heat-related illness. Rest, drink water, get to a cool location and call 911 if the symptoms progress.
