UPDATED: Gloucester Township MLK Day of Service Grows in Third Year

Officials are calling on residents to participate in a morning of service projects on the King Holiday on Jan. 20.

It started three years ago days before the Martin Luther King national holiday. Councilman Orlando Mercado wanted to organize volunteers for a day of service to honor the fallen civil rights champion.

Now in its third year, the Gloucester Township day of service continues to grow and continues to exceed expectations, officials said.

"It's an opportunity for people to get involved. It's nonpartisan. It's a chance for people to come out," Mercado said.

As of Sunday, Mercado said there were 282 registered participants. He said a large walkup crowd is also expected.
