Taking a page from the Transportation Safety Administration's playbook, race organizers are mandating runners use clear plastic drawstring bags, which will be handed out at the expo Friday and Saturday, to stow their gear this year. “You are strongly encouraged to bring as little as possible with you to the start of the race,” race organizers said in the email to runners. “All items brought into the start area are subject to search and/or confiscation.” Race organizers only indicated backpacks would be …

In the City of Brotherly Love, one popular way to show the love is apparently through one's socks. According to a recent Philly Mag blog post, many area sporting good stores are stocking up on red socks. Why? Because runners converging on Philadelphia are preparing to show they care. The New Jersey State Senate president said the national attention being paid to Rutgers over the scandal is an embarrassment.
New Jersey Senate President Stephen Sweeney said the national attention being paid to Rutgers University over the behavior of basketball coach Mike Rice has given the school a black eye. The state senator, whose office is located in West Deptford, appeared on the ESPN program Outside The Lines Wednesday afternoon to discuss the dismissal of the coach. Sweeney was frank in expressing his disappointment that Rice was not terminated in December 2012, when the tapes depicting the coach's apparently abusive practices surfaced. "Once you have something like that presented to you, there's no gray [area]," Sweeney said. "You don't have to do much of anything except take action to resolve the problem." Sweeney said it was "troubling" that the …

A video of Rutgers basketball coach Mike Rice surfaced, showing Rice yelling abusive and profane language and shoving and kicking players. The coach came under national scrutiny.
After less than a day of deflecting a storm of bad press surrounding head basketball coach Mike Rice's coaching methods, Rutgers University Athletic Director Tim Pernetti has confirmed that Rice has been fired. "I am responsible for the decision to attempt a rehabilitation of Coach Rice," Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti said in a statement. "Dismissal and corrective action were debated in December and I thought it was in the best interest of everyone to rehabilitate, but I was wrong. Moving forward, I will work to regain the trust of the Rutgers community." Rice, 44, who has coached the Scarlet Knights since 2010, was captured on tape verbally and physically abusing players. He spat curse words and insults at them, plus kicked and …

Can't get along with those for whom you are responsible? Sounds like a good reason to bump you up the ladder to a higher position...that's how the good ole boy network functions.   more ›
