Council Appropriates Money for Armored Police Vehicle

Despite more pleas from dissatisfied residents, the Gloucester Township Council unanimously OKs the re-appropriation of $550,000 that will partially be used for the armored vehicle purchase.

Gloucester Township moved closer at Monday's Council meeting to purchasing an armored vehicle for the township's police.  Council approved an ordinance that canceled $550,000 worth of appropriations from unused capital improvement funds from prior years. A portion of that money will be used toward the purchase of an armored police vehicle. Some of the expected $250,000 price tag for the vehicle will also come from proceeds from drug forfeiture cases. The proposed purchase was again a hot-button issue for numerous residents who attended Monday's meeting. For some residents, the cost of the armored vehicle remains a concern. Council Moves to Purchase Armored Police Vehicle

The vehicle allows police to rescue injured police officers and civilians in the event of an active mass shooting.

Gloucester Township Council on Monday agreed to move forward with the purchase of a vehicle that would allow police to move more quickly in the event of a school shooting. Police Chief W. Harry Earle met with Council during its work session Monday night to discuss the new SWAT vehicle. The Lenco armored police rescue vehicle will cost roughly $250,000, Business Administrator Tom Cardis said. It will be purchased using both unused capital improvement funds from prior years, going back to 2007, and proceeds from drug forfeiture cases.
