Vets Appreciation Parade to Hit Black Horse Pike Saturday Morning

Officials are encouraging area residents to bring a homemade sign to the parade along Black Horse Pike Saturday morning.

A parade to honor the area's military veterans and active troops, airmen and sailors will head north on the Black Horse Pike (Route 168) from Glendora into Runnemede this Saturday morning. Organizers encourage Gloucester Township, Bellmawr and Runnemede residents to come out to show their appreciation for the veterans who live among us. "They need to show up to support our troops," Kevin Bucceroni, a member of the parade organizing committee, said Thursday. "Our troops deserve the honor of having their presence." The first-ever Black Horse Pike "Welcome Home Veterans Parade" will feature members of seven area Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) posts and a local Marine Corps League organization, according to Bucceroni. The seven VFW posts are …

Stop in for a Scoop

Life’s a little sweeter at Hilltop Creamery.

Eighteen flavors of premium, hand-dipped ice cream is enough to entice anyone to pull over for a quick scoop. “People are usually happy when they pull in for ice cream. We deal in happiness,” said Hilltop Creamery owner Shannon Pass. HIlltop Creamery on Black Horse Pike has been a Gloucester Township fixture for more than 50 years. Geoffrey and Shannon Pass have been operating the ice cream business for a little more than a year now. Shannon says it is not unusual for customers to stop in and reminisce about eating ice cream at Hilltop with their grandparents. One of their repeat customers is a truck driver from Canada who always pulls in to grab a scoop of coconut ice cream. Before purchasing Hilltop in May 2010, Shannon, who used to work…

It's a Piece of Pie at Alfred's Tomato Pie

This tomato pie restaurant serves up more than 200 pies a week.

It's 3:30 p.m. and the phones won't stop ringing. It would seem that everyone wants a tomato pie from Alfred's Tomato Pie on the Black Horse Pike.  The atmosphere at Alfred's is more your favorite aunt's dining room (filled with your favorite cousins) than pizza joint. It is a place where you come to enjoy and where you come often. "People want to be taken care of and that's what we do," said owner Terri Berkholder, who bought the restaurant along with two of her daughters, Jessica Barrett and Summer Stanley, in May 2010. The family was a longtime fan of Alfred's Tomato Pie, which had been open for about five years under original owner Alfred Rossino. When Rossino closed his doors and put the restaurant up for sale, the family was …

Police, Public Works Promote Pedestrian Pathways

Six new pedestrian crosswalks were added across the township last week.

Police and public works personnel installed six pedestrian-crossing signs at three points last week to alert motorists to upcoming crosswalks. The signs were installed on Blackwood's Almonsesson Road, West Church Street and Lakeland Road where the township bicycle and walking path crosses each roadway. The reflective, in-street, high-visibility signs are used to remind drivers of New Jersey's relatively new right-of-way law at pedestrian crossings. "Casey's Law," which the Legislature passed last April, requires motorists to come to a complete stop and remain stopped for pedestrians in crosswalks, as well as for pedestrians crossing at intersections where there are no marked crosswalks. Motorists who fail to stop for pedestrians face fines…

Even if you do not believe for the reasoning for the installation of the pedestrian cross walk signs, the attention they cause with their presence should make both drivers and pedestrians more aware of some of the most dangerous spots for accidents in Gloucester Township. Anything that just might save one life should be considered a positive effort.   more ›
