PR Firm Bill Falls in BHPRSD Solicitor's $10K-$15K Estimate

A Philadelphia public relations firm brought in to handle the 'media barrage' in the wake of charges against five Triton High School educators costs nearly $15,000.

Fifteen days is all Black Horse Pike Regional School District (BHPRSD) needed from the Philadelphia public-relations firm it brought in to handle media inquiries and crisis management in the wake of perhaps the biggest scandal in district history. Braithwaite Communications' bill fell within BHPRSD Solicitor John Wade's estimate that the Philadelphia PR firm's services on the Triton teacher-student sex case would cost the district $10,000-$15,000. The final bill: $14,883.84. Of the $14,883.84, $14,425 went to pay for 74.5 billable hours worked by Braithwaite staff, while $458.84 went to sub-vendor PR Newswire for distribution of the district's original statement to media outlets. The nearly $15,000 invoice was submitted to Wade's law firm…

Local, Regional Schools Expect to Get More Money from State

Gov. Chris Christie's budget proposal includes more money for Gloucester Township Public Schools and Black Horse Pike Regional School District.

The Gloucester Township and Black Horse Pike Regional school districts are slated to receive more money from the state next year than they did for the current school year. "I'm pleased to report to you that state aid figures were released today, and we did receive an increase in state aid. So, notwithstanding the federal cuts, if we do get those reductions, I think the increase in state aid might mitigate those," GTPS interim Superintendent John Bilodeau said Thursday evening. Bilodeau was of course referring to the highly publicized federal sequester set to take effect at 11:59 p.m. tonight (March 1) should Congress fail to reach a compromise. New Jersey would receive about $28 million less for education from the federal government under …

Triton Sex Scandal Victims Might Sue School District

Notices of intent to sue were filed on behalf of all three Triton High School graduates.

Attorneys representing the three victims in the Triton Regional High School teacher-student sex case have filed notices of potential lawsuits. The notices of tort claim were filed in early November, roughly a month after charges were brought against five Triton educators—three male teachers accused of inappropriate relationships with female students and two administrators charged with covering up those relationships. One victim is represented by Philadelphia firm Cozen O'Connor and the other two victims by Mount Laurel-based firm McLaughlin & Lauricella. Former Triton teachers Jeffrey P. Logandro and Daniel R. Michielli have already pleaded guilty to inappropriate relationships with two potential plaintiffs, while the criminal case against…

Former Triton Principal, Teachers Collected $95K+ While Suspended

Black Horse Pike Regional School District reports former principal Catherine DePaul was paid more than $50,000 during her suspension.

Three former Triton Regional High School educators received paychecks totaling nearly $100,000 while they were suspended as a result of a teacher-student sex case that rocked the school last fall. Former principal Catherine DePaul and former teachers Jeffrey P. Logandro and Daniel R. Michielli stopped receiving paychecks when they forfeited their positions at the Runnemede school with guilty pleas entered earlier this month. None can ever hold public office in New Jersey again under the plea deals. According to figures provided to Patch by Black Horse Pike Regional School District (BHPRSD) this week as part of a broader Open Public Records Act filing, the district paid DePaul $50,600.56, Logandro $23,753.66 and Michielli $21,427.32 over …

Triton Teachers Plead Guilty, Face 30 Days Jail or House Arrest

Jeffrey P. Logandro and Daniel R. Michielli pleaded guilty Monday to third-degree conspiracy to commit official misconduct.

CAMDEN—Two Triton Regional High School teachers will possibly serve just 30 days under house arrest after entering guilty pleas Monday afternoon in connection with a teacher-student sex scandal that rocked the Runnemede school last fall. The two men—Jeffrey P. Logandro, 32, and Daniel R. Michielli, 27—also forfeited their ability to teach, or hold any public position, in New Jersey with the guilty pleas they entered before Superior Court Judge Thomas A. Brown Jr. Sentencing for both men is scheduled for March 15. Taking the five teachers and administrators charged in the scandal out of New Jersey's public schools has been authorities' goal since the probe, which began last summer, started mounting evidence against them, Camden County …

How Clean Is Your Child's Cafeteria?

Camden County's online database provides online, real-time food safety inspection reports. Here's how Gloucester Twp. schools performed.

Except for a few incidents, Gloucester Township schools largely are in full compliance with food safety regulations, county reports show. Blackwood Elementary School was dinged on its last inspection for using chlorine bleach in its dishwasher, and rated “conditionally satisfactory.” Union Valley had a very minor spork problem, which didn’t affect its rating. Camden County Technical School, however, had mouse infestation problem on its last inspection, plus general dirtiness in the food prep areas. The school, which serves both high school and adult students, has had similar problems in the past, reports show. Apart from Blackwood Elementary and the technical school, all other township schools were rated satisfactory. Camden County puts …

Your Children and Concussions

Have you heard of the ImPACT test? It’s used to gauge the impact of concussions and also provides a baseline for athletes prior to any type of head injury.

Concussions have been a recent hot topic in the sports world. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines a concussion as a type of traumatic brain injury, or TBI, caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head that can change the way your brain normally works. Concussions can also occur from a blow to the body that causes the head to move rapidly back and forth, according to the CDC. Not only have brain injuries been popular in national news, I've heard so many stories about local children and adults suffering from the aftermath of a blow to the head. My nephew, an athlete and honor student, has been out of school since last April due to consecutive concussions, the first one occurring in gym class. A friend’s daughter missed…
