Broad Street Run Bans Backpacks for 2013 Race

Runners are being encouraged to bring as little as possible with them this year.

Following the backpack bombings at the Boston Marathon two weeks ago, runners in this year's Broad Street Run in Philadelphia won't be able to tote their gear in a backpack, race organizers announced in a mass email to participants Monday. Taking a page from the Transportation Safety Administration's playbook, race organizers are mandating runners use clear plastic drawstring bags, which will be handed out at the expo Friday and Saturday, to stow their gear this year. “You are strongly encouraged to bring as little as possible with you to the start of the race,” race organizers said in the email to runners. “All items brought into the start area are subject to search and/or confiscation.” Race organizers only indicated backpacks would be …

Oh stop with the over dramatization of things regarding bags. My god the event is not just like many of the other races around the country. It's much more compact then Boston and has more participants. What a bunch of whiners.   more ›

'Red Sox' to Dominate Broad Street Run

Philadelphia's runners are showing support for Boston with their socks.

As the nation recovers from aftershocks of the Boston Marathon bombings, people are finding ways to support the city that lost so much. From Facebook posts to charitable donations, Bostonians-at-heart are rallying to show support for Beantown. In the City of Brotherly Love, one popular way to show the love is apparently through one's socks. According to a recent Philly Mag blog post, many area sporting good stores are stocking up on red socks. Why? Because runners converging on Philadelphia are preparing to show they care. Those participating in the Broad Street Run, slated for Sunday, May 5, are planning to wear red running socks to show love for Boston, whose major-league baseball team is the Red Sox.  Philly may be home to the most …

Broad Street Run Will Have Heightened Security, Philly Mayor Says

Following an attack on the Boston Marathon finish, Mayor Michael Nutter vows to step up security for the May 5 race.

The roughly 40,000 runners signed up for this year’s Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run in Philadelphia on May 5 can expect to see a major increase in security in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings, which killed three people and injured more than 130, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said at a press conference Monday evening. While Nutter didn’t lay out specifics of what that extra security would entail, he said it will be in force along the entire length of the 10-mile race, which starts just south of Central High School and finishes alongside mothballed Navy ships in the city’s Navy Yard in a straight shot down Broad Street. “At this time, there are no specific threats or threat incidents in Philadelphia, but of course, we …

Area Patch Reader, we are all part of history when it comes to terrorism. What the terrorists do is try to make us fear and do things differently because of that fear. The above posts by apprehensive people are proof (historical proof) that the terrorists are accomplishing their goal. I now always have extra apprehension when I go to any crowded place and take some sort of extra safety steps. It …   more ›

Gloucester Township 10-Year-Old Makes Her Mark at Broad Street Run

Allie Hauer was one of the youngest people to finish the 2012 Broad Street Run in Philadelphia.

Allie Hauer cruised across the finish line at the Broad Street Run in Philadelphia on Sunday, holding her mother's hand.  Mother and daughter finished the 10-mile race in 1:47:45. Allie, 10, was one of the youngest of 34,012 finishers, according to official race results.  "She wouldn't stop, she wouldn't slow down," Erika Hauer, 36, said of her daughter. "She could have kept going after that." Allie, who turned 10 on April 29, said her favorite part of the race was seeing the mass of runners gathered at the starting line of the nation's largest 10-mile run.  Along the race course, people cheered on the young dynamo, and sang "Happy Birthday" to Allie as she ran past, her mother said.  (Allie and her mom wore matching pink T-shirts that …

Pint-Sized Runner from Gloucester Township Competing in Broad Street Run

Allie Hauer, a 10-year-old student at Erial Elementary School, will run in the 10-mile race this weekend.

Although more than 38,000 runners are expected to compete in the Broad Street Run in Philadelphia on Sunday, May 6, Allie Hauer will be easy to spot. She’ll be one of the youngest runners in the 10-mile race, having turned 10 on Sunday, April 29. She’ll also be wearing a pink T-shirt that says “Go Allie” on the front, and “10 Miles for her 10th Birthday” on the back. Plus, she’s only 4 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs less than 60 pounds. So how did a pint-sized fourth-grader at Erial Elementary School end up registered for the country’s largest 10-mile run? The answer is simple: For Allie, running is a chance to bond with her mother.  “I like doing the races for fun, and me and my mommy get time to talk about things without anybody …
