Alleged Doctor Kickbacks Cost Cooper $12.6M

A Haddonfield doctor’s whistleblower lawsuit sparked an investigation that ended in a multimillion dollar settlement payment by Cooper Health System.

HADDONFIELD-HADDON TOWNSHIP, NJ -- Cooper Health System will pay $12.6 million to settle allegations the Camden hospital engaged in kickbacks to doctors as it built its cardiology program, state and federal officials said Thursday. Cooper agreed to pay the federal government $10.2 million and the state $2.3 million in the joint settlement, plus attorney’s fees of $430,000 to a whistleblower, Haddonfield cardiologist Dr. Nicholas DePace. The hospital also already implemented, and agreed to maintain, corporate reforms for accountability, training and other aspects of compliance. Planning Board Approves Billboards Along Route 42

Cooper Health System received the go-ahead to erect three billboards—each up to 60 feet tall—on property it owns along the state highway.

Expect to see billboards, including one with a changing sign face, looming over the stretch of Route 42 running through the township. During a special meeting Wednesday night, the township planning board  unanimously granted preliminary and final approval to a proposal by Cooper Health System to place three billboards—each up to 60 feet high—on land it owns along the state highway. Two of the billboards will have static signs, and the third will be digital, with rotating messages. Planning Board to Consider Billboard Proposal for Route 42

Cooper Health System wants to erect three billboards—each up to 60 feet high—on property it owns along Route 42 in the township.

The Planning Board will review a proposal by Cooper Health System to place three billboards—each up to 60 feet high—along a portion of Route 42 that runs through the township. Representatives of Gloucester 42 Associates, a limited-liability company formed by Cooper, will appear before the township planning board tonight, Wednesday, Nov. 16 during a special meeting. The billboard proposal is the only item on the agenda. The meeting begins 7:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at the Municipal Complex.
