Still Time to Sign Up for MLK Day of Service

Gloucester Township still needs more volunteers.

There's still time to sign up to volunteer in Gloucester Township on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The second annual Gloucester Township MLK Day of Service will be held on Monday, Jan. 21, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Register to volunteer by clicking here. You will be given the option to select two projects for which you wish to volunteer. As of Monday night, about 110 people had signed up to participate in the Day of Service, according to Gloucester Township Council Vice President Orlando Mercado, who is heading the service project for the township. Mercado expects volunteers will be informed what project they've been assigned on Friday. Volunteers are asked to first report to the Gloucester Township Senior Center at the Chews Landing Road …

Bianchini, Mercado Returned to Council Leadership Posts

Gloucester Township Council also adopts its 2013 meeting schedule during its reorganization meeting.

The longtime duo of Glen Bianchini and Orlando Mercado will continue to serve as Gloucester Township Council's president and vice president, respectively, into 2013. Councilman Frank Schmidt nominated Bianchini for a return to the position he has held since 2002 during the township's reorganization meeting Wednesday night. Schmidt's nomination of Bianchini was unanimously approved. Councilman Dan Hutchison then nominated Mercado for a return to the position he has held for several years now. That nomination also was unanimously approved. Mayor David Mayer swore in both Bianchini and Mercado for their respective Council leadership roles during Wednesday night's brief meeting. Sign Up Now for MLK Day of Service

Gloucester Township asks its residents to "make it a day on, not a day off."

  Gloucester Township Council Vice President Orlando Mercado was pleasantly surprised when more than 100 people showed up to volunteer for the township's first-ever Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service in 2012. He wants—and expects—to see more than that for 2013's MLK Day of Service. "We have 10 service projects where we are asking for volunteers from throughout our community to participate in," Mercado said during last Thursday's Council meeting. "Last year was the first year we did this and we ended up with about 120 volunteers, (and) we only put it out two weeks prior to it. ... Hispanic Heritage Celebration Nominations Now Being Accepted

Nominations forms are due in by Sept. 14.

Nominations are now being accepted for the township's Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration. Awards will be presented at the beginning of the Township Council's Sept. 24 meeting, which is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. Nomination forms are due to the Township Clerk's Office by 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14. Nominees must live or work in the township and be an exemplary citizen who has made significant contributions to the township through volunteer service. This will be the sixth year Council will host the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration. The program really grew over the last two years, with nine recipients in both 2010 and 2011 following years of just one, two and one recipients in 2009, 2008 and 2006, respectively.
