Two-Year Anniversary for GT Patch

Gloucester Township Patch launched Dec. 6, 2010.

Gloucester Township Patch has been bringing local (and sometimes regional) news to township residents for two years now. That's right! Today, Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, marks Patch's second anniversary—or second birthday, if you will—in Gloucester Township. I've had the good pleasure of serving as GloucesterTownship.Patch.com's editor for its entire two-year existence, growing it from its infancy to where it stands today—a website read by tens of thousands of people each month. The site launched Dec. 6, 2010. On that day, the Gloucester Township Patch Facebook page had less than two dozen "likes"—and, in the interest of honesty, those were just a few of my friends, family and colleagues. That number has since increased to 1,330 "likes." Our …

Erial's Run Comes to End in Wild Fashion

Erial lost to West Deptford, 19-18, in eight innings.

When the 11-12 Little League teams from Erial and West Deptford each scored four runs in the first inning, the tempo was set for what looked to be a wild and frenzied Section 4 loser’s bracket final. However, no one could have predicted just how crazy things would get. After two-and-a-half hours of back-and-forth baseball the seesaw finally tipped, and did so in West Deptford’s favor, 19-18, in eight innings. By game’s end both coaches were left shaking their heads, if not for the same reason. “It’s been tough,” Erial manager Jeff Mastrogiovanni said. “Twenty-eight hours ago we were looking to beat Monroe to move into the finals and sit back and be ready for the section championship. Even though we lost, the kids never game up. They kept …

The head coach from Erail was way to confident after just three wins in his on District 14.. Talking best hitting team in the state, best pitchers in his section and saying all that before he even got out of district 14.. check the articals. He was not a state championship team as he so believed and made know, and you just don't say those things early in the tournament. But congrats to those boys…   more ›

Erial Suffers First Defeat, Back in Action Tonight

Monroe Township's Nick Lonetto hit three home runs as Erial's 11-12 all-star team was handed its first loss in 2012 tournament play Thursday night.

All great teams face adversity. It’s how that team responds when faced with it that ultimately determines how successful the team is when it's all said and done. That it the point the Erial Little League Majors Division team is at after it suffered its first defeat in the entire all-star tournament Thursday night. Backed by three home runs—including a grand slam—and eight RBIs by Nick Lonetto, Monroe Township sent Erial into the elimination bracket with its 13-9 win in the Section 4 semifinals. Erial must now defeat West Deptford tonight to earn a trip into the finals, where it would then have to beat Monroe twice to capture the Section 4 title. “We beat ourselves,” said Erial manager Jeff Mastrogiovanni. "We made mistakes in the field and…

Mastrogiovanni Learns from First At-Bat, Then Goes Deep

Matt Mastrogiovanni hit a two-run homer for Erial, on Tuesday.

Lil’ Slugger's Name: Matt Mastrogiovanni Lil’ Slugger's Team: Erial Little League Lil’ Slugger's Position: First base Lil’ Slugger's Accomplishment: Mastrogiovanni worked a full count in the third inning of a 1-1 game, then blasted a curveball close to 300 feet, over the left-field fence. The homer gave Erial a 3-1 lead and helped it win its Section 4 tournament opener with a 5-3 win over Margate. Lil' Slugger's Key to Awesomeness: Mastrogiovanni was not deterred by his first-inning strikeout; instead he learned from it. Mastrogiovanni struck out on a curveball in his first at-bat, so he anticipated seeing it again with the count 3-2 in his second at-bat. When he got it, he didn’t miss. “I was looking for a curveball because in the first …

Homers, Clutch Pitching Lead Erial to Victory

Two players hit two-run homers, while three pitchers combined to shut down Margate in a 5-3 Erial win in Section 4 play.

As expected, the competition was raised a notch for the Erial Major Division Little League All-Stars in the team's opener of New Jersey's Section 4 tournament Tuesday night. Fortunately, Erial raised its game also, combining power, big-time pitching and a flare for the dramatic to pull out a 5-3 win over Margate to advance to the winners' bracket semifinals. Backed by two-run homers from Matt Mastrogiovanni and Sean Gaugler, Erial jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings. However, that lead shrunk to 5-3 and Margate had runners on second and third in the sixth before Devin Leary struck out the only batter he faced to end the game. Erial will be back in action Thursday in Linwood. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game's last inning …

Erial Primed for Section 4 Opener

Erial opens Section 4 play on Tuesday.

The Erial 11-12 Little League Baseball All-Stars begin their quest to win a Section 4 title Tuesday at 7 p.m. Erial cruised through District 14, winning its fifth straight district title in undefeated fashion. The team won every game by mercy rule until it ran into a serious test in crosstown rival Blackwood Kiwanis. Blackwood led the district final 3-2 entering the sixth inning, but Erial battled back with five runs to move on to the next round. Section 4 is made up of teams from Cape May County, Atlantic County, Cumberland County, Salem County, Gloucester County, Camden County and the southern part of Burlington and Ocean counties. Erial has a first-round bye and will take on the winner of East Vineland (Cumberland County/District 3) and…

Boy Hit in Chest by Foul Ball Doing Well

The boy hit with a line drive during Tuesday's District 14 championship game suffered no serious injuries, according to his father.

The young boy who was struck by a foul ball during Tuesday’s District 14 championship game between Blackwood Kiwanis and Erial is doing fine, his father told Gloucester Township Patch. The 10-year-old boy—who will remain unidentified—was standing just behind the left-field fence, about 10 feet from the foul side of the foul pole at the Erial Little League George Erdbrink Complex's Majors Division field. An Erial batter hit a screaming line drive over the fence and directly into the left side of the boy's chest. He was looking the other way and the ball was hit so hard, spectators had no chance of warning him. He stood still, stunned for a couple of seconds, before collapsing to the ground. He remained on the ground for more than 20 minutes…

Gaugler Bails Out Erial

Erial's Shawn Gaugler took the mound in a bases-loaded jam in the first inning and never came out.

Lil’ Slugger's Name: Shawn Gaugler Lil’ Slugger's Position: Pitcher Lil Slugger's Team: Erial Little League 11-12 All-Stars Lil’ Slugger's Accomplishment: Entering Tuesday night's District 14 championship game in the first inning in a bases-loaded jam with just one out and two runs already in, Gaugler was able to escape allowing only one Blackwood run on a fielder’s choice. From there he went on to shut down the Blackwood bats, affording his team the opportunity to stage a dramatic sixth-inning comeback in a 6-3 win. Gaugler needed just 50 pitches to complete 5 2/3 innings, picking up the win and leading his team to a District 14 championship. Lil’ Slugger's Key to Awesomeness: Gaugler was able to keep hitters off-balance by mixing his …
