Jason Handy Sentenced for Taxi Assaults

DNA helped crack the cold case against the Blackwood man, who held up two taxi drivers at knifepoint in 2006.

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ -- A Blackwood man who held up two female cab drivers in knifepoint assaults—stuffing one in the trunk of her own taxi—was sentenced Friday to 23 years in state prison. Jason Handy, 33, of Willow Cedar Way, must serve 85 of his sentence—more than 19 years—before he’s eligible for parole on the kidnapping and carjacking convictions. Handy pleaded guilty in October to two assaults on the taxi drivers, one in March 2006 in Gloucester Township and the second in May 2006 in Lindenwold. In the first case, Handy assaulted the driver at knifepoint, bound and gagged her and stuffed her in the trunk of the cab. He then drove to Camden and abandoned the cab with the woman still in the trunk. Handy tried a similar attack …

Years After Crimes, DNA Cracks Cab Driver Assault Cases

  A Blackwood man who terrorized and assaulted two female cab drivers in 2006 pleaded guilty to the crimes in court Wednesday. Jason Handy, 33, of the first block of Willow Cedar Way, entered guilty pleas for charges of kidnapping and carjacking. He’ll learn his sentence Nov. 30 from Superior Court Judge Samuel Natal, the Camden County Prosecutor's Office said. Handy assaulted the first cab driver in Gloucester Township at knifepoint on March 28, 2006. He bound and gagged her before stuffing her in the trunk of the cab and driving to Camden. Handy abandoned the car with the woman still inside. On May 1, 2006, Handy mounted a similar attack against a woman in Lindenwold. That victim escaped as Handy tried to put her in the trunk.
