Local, Regional Schools Expect to Get More Money from State

Gov. Chris Christie's budget proposal includes more money for Gloucester Township Public Schools and Black Horse Pike Regional School District.

The Gloucester Township and Black Horse Pike Regional school districts are slated to receive more money from the state next year than they did for the current school year. "I'm pleased to report to you that state aid figures were released today, and we did receive an increase in state aid. So, notwithstanding the federal cuts, if we do get those reductions, I think the increase in state aid might mitigate those," GTPS interim Superintendent John Bilodeau said Thursday evening. Bilodeau was of course referring to the highly publicized federal sequester set to take effect at 11:59 p.m. tonight (March 1) should Congress fail to reach a compromise. New Jersey would receive about $28 million less for education from the federal government under …

I have lived in Gloucester Twp for over 50 yrs. First, I would like to say that I chose to have my children attend the Glou. Twp. schools up thru the 8th grade. They all went to a private high school for personal reasons. They have all received a very good education/ inc. college. My youngest daughter was the valedictorian of St. Joseph's University. I am very sad to read the results of the …   more ›

Opponents of School Principal Shakeup Plan Victorious—for Now

Faced with hundreds of incensed parents and teachers, the Gloucester Twp. school board changes course on a plan to transfer principals and vice principals.

An outpouring of fury from parents and educators livid at a planned wide-ranging shuffle of principals and vice principals in Gloucester Township schools prevailed Monday. After hearing two hours of angry comments from teachers and parents about the proposed rearrangement of school administrators midyear and with short notice, the school board of the K-8 district curtailed most of the changes. Instead, the board approved: Emotions—from piercing sobs to angry yelling to rousing words of support and, finally, yells of “thank you!”—punctuated the standing-room-only Gloucester Township school board meeting. One by one, parents and teachers stood to protest a domino situation that would have seen several principals and vice principals …

Schools Chief Pleased by Security Upgrades

Gloucester Township's interim schools superintendent applauds police plan, predicts more security upgrades.

Gloucester Township Police Department announced last week it has bolstered security in and around the township's 11 kindergarten through eighth-grade schools. The Police Department's Juvenile Unit has been expanded from four officers to eight, including a sergeant who will serve as unit commander and direct all school- and juvenile-related activities, in order to implement the school security enhancement, according to Police Chief W. Harry Earle. John Bilodeau, interim superintendent of Gloucester Township Public Schools (GTPS), this week applauded the plan, which will not put an armed officer in each of the district's 11 school buildings—eight K-5 schools and three middle schools—at all times, but nonetheless brings an increased police …

Perhaps less "talk" would help. I suggest authorities consider constructing a secure foyer, with people buzzed into that area. AFTER their ID and purpose have been confirmed, they could then be admitted into the building. Cost would be far less than a paid, armed person on duty, and, if constructed of proper materials, they and the entrance would be quite secure.   more ›

Bilodeau Ready to Fill Seddon's Shoes

Gloucester Township Public Schools' current business administrator looks forward to stepping in as interim superintendent come Sept.1.

The recently appointed Gloucester Township Public Schools (GTPS) interim superintendent has a long history working for school districts and in business administration. John Bilodeau is entering his 10th year with the local K-8 district. He will fill Thomas Seddon's shoes when the longtime superintendent retires effective Sept. 1.  Prior to coming to Gloucester Township, Bilodeau served the Pennsauken Township School District as director of business services. He spent eight years in that position before he was promoted to district business administrator in 1998. Bilodeau came to Gloucester Township in 2003, and was named GTPS assistant superintendent of business in 2005.  The GTPS Board of Education has approved Bilodeau under the "interim…

Bilodeau will lead the state's largest K-8 district starting Sept. 1.

Gloucester Township Public Schools (GTPS) Board of Education has selected current Assistant Superintendent of Business John Bilodeau as the district's interim superintendent. Bilodeau's term as interim superintendent takes effect Sept. 1, just days before the start of the 2012-13 academic year. While approved by the local board of education, the county superintendent's office still must sign off on Bilodeau’s contract. Glo. Twp. Public Schools Holds Extra Aid

Gov. Christie announced in mid-July that the district would receive an additional $954,775 in aid out of the state's fiscal year 2012 budget.

Gloucester Township Public Schools (GTPS) will move the additional $954,775 in state aid it received last month to the 2012-13 budget. Gov. Chris Christie announced on July 13 that most districts across New Jersey would receive more money from the state than was announced in February.   The state gave school districts until July 19 to decide how to allocate the additional funding. Like GTPS, many districts across the state have opted to allocate the additional funding to a future school year. According to GTPS Assistant Superintendent John Bilodeau, following the governor's initial announcement, the state stipulated that the funds could be used in the upcoming 2011-2012 school year or allocated to be used during one of the next two school …
