Chargers Heading Back to Title Game

Timber Creek defeated Shawnee, 32-22, in the NJSIAA Group 4 semifinals.

Timber Creek is heading back to the championship. One season after running the table and winning a Group 3 title, the Chargers are one win away from earning a Group 4 crown. No. 1 Timber Creek advanced to the championship by way of a 32-22 win over No. 4 Shawnee, Friday night. The final score didn’t represent how dominant the Chargers were for much of the game. Timber Creek built a 32-10 lead before Shawnee clawed back in the game with a pair of fourth-quarter scores. Junior quarterback Junior Dan Williams stayed hot, completing 14 of 21 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns. Williams entered the game with seven touchdowns in his last two contests. The Chargers set the tempo for the game early in the first quarter when senior running …

Chargers Ready for Return Trip to State Final

With a victory over Shawnee Friday night, Timber Creek will be back in the state final for a second consecutive year.

For players like Khalil Pierce and Greg Webb, Friday night’s Group 4 football semifinal between Timber Creek and Shawnee represents a chance to once again show their skills on the biggest stage. For players like Dan Williams and Zaire Williams, the game represents an opportunity to taste what the varsity members of the 2011 team got to enjoy. Whether the desire to win a first championship or a second, the hunger is the same throughout the huddle of Chargers players as they prepare for Friday's semifinal. “We have to be playing our best; it’s the playoffs,” Pierce, a senior running back, said. “Our coaches have stepped their game up and we need to step ours up. We have to keep it rolling.” Earlier this season, Williams talked about his …

Williams Shines in First Playoff Game for Chargers

Quarterback Dan Williams threw for three scores and ran for another in Timber Creek's 37-6 win over Hammonton.

For most of the season Dan Williams was in and out of the lineup as the quarterback for the Timber Creek Regional High School football team. Williams rotated with Miles Nash, and at times, Jagger Green, at the position, with each showing reason to continue to earn playing time. By the end of the regular season Williams had finally placed himself as the go-to guy at the position and was tasked with leading the Chargers back to the state finals. On the first playoff game of his career, Williams made his head coach look like a genius. Williams threw for three scores and ran for another, leading No. 1 Timber Creek to a 37-6 win over No. 8 Hammonton, in a rematch of last year’s Group 3 final. The Chargers will face No. 5 Shawnee in the Group 4 …

Turnovers Lead to Rare Loss for Chargers

Timber Creek threw five interceptions in a 14-7 loss to Camden Catholic.

No matter what the sport or what the level, defending a championship is never easy. It is a reality the Timber Creek High School football team found out the hard way Friday night when the Chargers came up short in a battle of heavyweights with Camden Catholic, losing 14-7. Last year, the Chargers went 12-0, winning a West Jersey League Royal Division title and South Jersey Group 3 championship along the way. Both of those accomplishments remain obtainable in 2012, but this year’s team is saddled with a 0-1 start. “It is disappointing, but we are going to take it as something to learn from,” said senior lineman Dajaun Drennon, who had two sacks in Friday's loss. “Last year, I guess you could say we didn’t know the feeling of losing. Now …

Championship Win Caps Perfect Season for Chargers

Timber Creek controlled both sides of the ball in a 33-7 win over Hammonton in the Group 3 championship Saturday. "This is the greatest feeling I have ever had my whole life," one player said.

With his team holding just a six-point lead, Timber Creek Regional High School quarterback Calvin Lowe dropped back and delivered the prettiest pass of his Chargers career. The ball sailed more than 60 yards in the air and fell right into the waiting hands of Bryce Shade, who took the few remaining steps necessary to reach the end zone. Simply put, the pass was perfect. And a little over an hour later, so were the Chargers. No. 1 Timber Creek capped off its undefeated season with a 33-7 demolition of No. 2 Hammonton in the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 3 finals at Rowan University Saturday afternoon. Lowe was handed the championship trophy after the game, a fitting gesture considering he threw for 170 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for …

Great job, Chargers! And kudos to Quanzell Lambert for taking the time while basking in the glory of a championship to remember those Mainland Regional players who were killed in a car crash this summer.   more ›

Timber Creek Downs Woodrow Wilson, Heads Back to Championship

The Chargers overcome the absence of Quanzell Lambert with aggressive defense and 21 unanswered points to advance to their second state title game in school history.

Timber Creek entered the South Jersey Group III semifinal game against Woodrow Wilson without its best defensive player, Quanzell Lambert. With Lambert sidelined with a high ankle sprain, his season, as well as his high school career, could have ended on Friday night with a loss. However, two juniors, Taliq Chambers and Khalil Pierce, stepped into the spotlight and took charge of the defense. After allowing the No. 4 Tigers to take an early 7-0 lead, the defense held stout, not allowing Woodrow Wilson to score again until late in the fourth quarter. That gave the offense time to score three unanswered touchdowns and cap off a 21-12 victory to send the Chargers to the South Jersey Group III championship game. “I'm very happy for Quanzell, …

Chargers Shut Out Lacey in Playoff Opener

Timber Creek got three long touchdowns—one each from their offense, defense and special teams—as they blanked Lacey to advance in the playoffs.

Coming into Friday night's South Jersey Group 3 first-round playoff game against Timber Creek, Lacey Township running back Kyle Spatz had run for 1,093 yards on the season. However, he had yet to meet the ferocious Charger defense. Even with Timber Creek's star linebacker Quanzell Lambert missing most of the game with an injured ankle, Spatz and the Lions offense failed to make any type of inroads against Timber Creek. The Chargers (9-0) got three long touchdowns in the first half as they shut out Lacey (4-6) 23-0 on Friday night. The Lions struggled offensively all night long as Spatz was held to 53 yards rushing on 23 carries and only broke one run for more than 10 yards in the game. Run-stuffing defensive tackle Greg Webb was huge in …

BHPRSD Week 9 Football Forecast

Timber Creek takes on Highland, while Triton looks to secure a playoff spot. Plus, an injury update on Josh Woods

It was Black Friday last week for two local football teams, as a pair of standout running backs were knocked out of action with injuries. Both Triton’s Josh Woods and Timber Creek’s Khalil Pierce will be sidelined today with hopes of recovering in time for the playoffs, which begin next week. Woods was feared to have the more serious injury and had an MRI on his knee Monday. The good news is that the scan reportedly showed no indication of an ACL tear. Woods will rest and go through rehab for the next week or two before being re-evaluated. Woods was injured on Friday against Paul VI when he hyper-extended his knee while fighting for extra yards. He was on a pace to surpass 1,000 yards for the season and is currently sidelined at 899 yards…

BHPRSD Sports Week in Review and Look Ahead

Several teams compete in playoff action this week.

The last seven days have produced some great action around Timber Creek, Triton and Highland high schools, but this week promises to be even better. The NJSIAA South Jersey playoffs open this week for the boys’ and girls’ soccer programs, and a few local teams looked poised to make deep runs. Below is a look back at the week that was and a sneak peak ahead to what this week’s schedule offers. Football It was a tough Friday night for running backs as both Josh Woods of Triton and Khalil Pierce of Timber Creek went down with leg injuries. Woods was hurt in the Mustangs’ 35-6 win over Paul VI. Woods was scheduled to get an MRI and should know more about the extent of his injury in the coming days. Pierce’s injury did not appear to be too bad…
