Township Republicans sued in an attempt to nullify the Democrats' choice to fill an unexpired council seat, saying the process took too long.
A judge on Monday shot down the local GOP's attempt to unseat a Democratic councilwoman appointed in February. However, the judge said he was "troubled" by the way township council handled the appointment. Township Republicans filed a lawsuit in March contending the appointment of Democrat Michelle Winters to council was illegal because the governing body waited too long. The GOP asked in its complaint that the appointment be voided, which would have meant the seat would remain vacant until it expired at the end of this year. According to state law, when a member of a municipal governing body leaves, that member's local political party has 15 days to submit to the body the names of three nominees, and the body has 30 days from the time …

The case is scheduled to be heard on Monday in state Superior Court in Camden.
Township Democrats would not seem to be hurt by a challenge for one seat with a 7-0 advantage on the council. But a scrum between the township GOP and Democrats over the February appointment of Michelle Winters to the council has landed in state Superior Court in Camden. The local GOP plan to be in court in Camden on Monday to argue Democrats took too long to fill the seat vacated by Michelle Gentek after she was sworn in as a Camden County freeholder on Jan. 4. From that point, they argue, local Democrats had 30 days to appoint a replacement. They cited state statue 40A:16-11 which states that the local political party of the departing municipal government member has 15 days to present a nominee to council and council has another 15 days …

Michelle Winters gets an assist from the woman she replaces on Gloucester Township Council in taking her oath of office.
Gloucester Township's newest Council member was sworn in during the governing body's meeting Monday night. Michelle Winters' oath of office was administered by the woman whose seat she's taking on Township Council—Camden County Freeholder Michelle Gentek. Winters has extensive background as a volunteer in Gloucester Township, but has never held public office. She vowed to not let her inexperience in government hold her back as she completes the final 10 months of Gentek's term. "I'm kind of just going to learn as I go and make an impact where I can," Winters, a nurse who lives in the township's Blenheim section, said following Monday's meeting. Council unanimously selected Winters, a 1985 Triton Regional High School graduate, to replace …

The newest member of Gloucester Township Council is to take her oath of office on Monday.
Michelle L. Winters is now just days away from officially becoming a member of Gloucester Township Council. Unanimously selected by Council to complete Michelle Gentek's unexpired term at its Feb. 11 meeting, the 1985 Triton Regional High School graduate will take the oath of office at Council's Feb. 25 meeting. “We had many qualified individuals in our township who applied to serve on council,” Mayor David Mayer said, “but Michelle stood out because of her community service and volunteerism within Gloucester Township and her commitment to improving the quality of life in our community." Gentek became a Camden County freeholder in early January following her election in November 2012, creating a vacancy on Gloucester Township Council. …

Council pegs Blenheim's Michelle Winters to serve out the remaining 10-plus months of Michelle Gentek's term.
Township Council chose Michelle Winters from a list of four residents nominated by the Gloucester Township Democrat Committee to complete what remains of Michelle Gentek's four-year term. The all-Democrat Council was unanimous in approving Winters to serve on the governing body through Dec. 31, 2013. Councilwoman Tracey Trotto nominated Winters for the Council seat, and her motion was seconded by Councilman Dan Hutchison. "Ms. Winters is a longtime resident of our township, a Triton graduate," Council Vice President Orlando Mercado said. "Lives in the Blenheim section of our town, is involved with the Triton Field Hockey Booster Club, is a part of the Gloucester Township Hockey Association, is a first-aid instructor for the Blackwood …
