Not Just Pizza: Serving Up Good Eats, Good Karma

Stop in to Not Just Pizza in Sicklerville through April 1 and try one of five special sandwiches benefiting local schools.

What do the Union Valley Bulldog, the Jem, the Erial Epic, the Mullenader and the Charger have in common? Neighborhood Cuisine: Coppola's Restaurant and Pizza

Maybe you stop in for the pizza or maybe you go for the penne alla vodka, but you leave a friend.

While you might think of Coppola’s as the place to go to grab a pizza or a plate of penne alla vodka, what the regulars go to Coppola’s for is the friendship. Coppola's Restaurant and Pizza owner Salvatore Coppola knows his regular customers by name and strives to make Coppola’s a place that feels like home. “We serve customers from the time they are babies to the time they get married,” said Coppola, who grew up in Italy. The restaurant has been in Gloucester Township since the 1980s and at its current location since 1996.  “The best thing about doing business in Gloucester Township is that everyone knows everybody. It is a warm and friendly community,” said Coppola. “We live in town and people support you as their neighbor.” The menu …

Coppola's has the best pizza in the area. We are Italian and used to go to Philly for decent pizza for years but now have been going to Coppola's since it opened.   more ›

Privito’s To Go: Upscale Take Out Right in Town

If you are not already a regular, you will be. Check out Privito’s To Go in the Laurel Hill Plaza.

Privito’s To Go owner Mark Privito has worked in the restaurant business his whole career. His resume includes the Tropicana Casino in Atlantic City, Carmen’s in Ventor, La Cucina in Center City, the Cherry Hill Hyatt, Chateau Savannah and La Posata in Marlton, and, of course, the 19-year-old Privito’s To Go in the Laurel Hill Plaza on College Drive.  When Privito imagined going out on his own, he first thought of an upscale, dine-in restaurant. But then his thinking shifted and after years of working late nights, Privito wanted to do something lighter.  Privito decided on a new concept: Upscale take-out, an Italian delicatezza that served local favorites like hoagies and cheesesteaks alongside gourmet specialities like whole-baked …

Small Business Saturday in Gloucester Township

Skip the crowds on Black Friday, and shop local on Nov. 24 for unique gifts and products.

(Editor's Note: This article was initially published on Gloucester Township Patch on Saturday, Nov. 17.) While the crowds will line up on Thanksgiving ahead of mass market, Black Friday deals at the big box stores, the real deals and unique gifts are right here in Gloucester Township. Small Business Saturday, held each year on the Saturday following the traditional Black Friday sales, is a day to celebrate small businesses and all they do for the local community.  Stevie Matteo, owner of Slim Chicks Fitness in Sicklerville, views shopping locally as a way to not only support the local economy, but also to support local charities and community groups. “Every time you buy local, you support the merchants who are sponsoring athletic teams and…

Here is a great idea for protecting your phone, tablet, laptop and even your camera, keys, luggage, pet and passport while traveling. Two years ago, I found MYSTUFFLOSTANDFOUND and obtained tracker tags for OKOBAN, a free global lost and found service. I placed tracker tags on all of my valuables. It paid off in Florence. I left my passport at a restaurant at lunch. That afternoon, I received a …   more ›

Hoagie Heaven in Blackwood

Lucia's Deli serves up nearly 50 Italian hoagies and specialty sandwiches.

A large Italian hoagie at Lucia’s Deli in Blackwood has more than one-and-a-half pounds of prosciutto, provolone, capicola and genoa salami. It is massive and wildly popular. In any given week, Lucia’s owner Ryan Mackay and his staff of eight serve up more than 450 Italian specialty sandwiches ranging from the popular Italian hoagie to chicken cutlet hoagies with provolone and broccoli rabe to the Italian diavlo—a spicy hoagie made with hot sopressata ham and spicy capicola.  The Lucia's menu has 46 varieties of hoagies, plus party trays and fresh made sides like pepper shooters, macaroni salad, cole slaw, potato salad, marinated roasted peppers, and other Italian deli sides.  Mackay purchased the deli from the Lucia family in January.  “I…

Coffee, Cover to Cover

The Book Asylum—Gloucester Township's only bookstore—opens a coffee shop in downtown Blackwood.

Skip the drive to Barnes & Noble in Deptford and, instead, check out Gloucester Township's newest spot for coffee, books and community. "We've always loved coffee and books," said Rosemary Moore, who owns The Book Asylum with her husband, Jeff. "Barnes & Noble was our date night." The Book Asylum at 26 N. Black Horse Pike in downtown Blackwood opened nearly two years ago. This July, the store opened an 800-square-foot coffee shop. The shop serves all the traditional coffeehouse favorites like lattes, espresso, coffee, baked goods and even pumpkin pie coffee for the fall. The store will host an official grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 6, with Mayor David Mayer officiating. Rosemary made sure to source local and sustainable…

Duffield's Farm Serves Up Fresh Produce and Family Entertainment

Stop by nearby Sewell's pick-your-own family farm for apples, pumpkins and lots of fall fun.

Every fall, Duffield's Farm Market welcomes more than 10,000 people to its apple orchards and pumpkin fields.   The family-owned-and-operated farm, on Chapel Heights Road in nearby Sewell, has been producing fresh fruits and vegetables since the 1930s.  "I bring my children to Duffield's every fall for apple-picking," said Keren Fitzgerald, a Duffield's regular from Sewell. "And again in the spring for a hayride to the Easter Bunny. We love it there. It is a great, economical way to spend a Saturday." Duffield's offers a variety of family activities throughout the year—visits with the Easter Bunny, strawberry- and pea-picking in the spring, peach-picking in the summer, apples and hay rides to the pumpkin patch in the fall, and winter hay …
