Three players from the Colonial Conference will have the chance to earn a Super Bowl ring Sunday.
By now, the story of Joe Flacco’s rise from a starting quarterback at Audubon High School to NFL quarterback is pretty well known. What may be overlooked, though, is that Flacco is not the only South Jersey native competing in the Super Bowl on Sunday. In fact, he is one of three players on the Ravens who hail from the Colonial Conference playing for a Super Bowl ring. Bryant McKinnie, who spent just two seasons at Woodbury High School, is the Ravens' starting left tackle, while Alex Silvestro, who played for Paulsboro High School, is on the Ravens' practice squad as a tight end. The success of the trio is a clear demonstration that a player doesn’t have to come from a giant football powerhouse to reach success at a sport’s highest level…

The Mustangs used a great play call and a thrilling late-game goal line stand to earn the win.
For the second straight week, the Triton football team hosted one of South Jersey's premiere football teams. For the second straight week, they fell behind on their home turf. And for the second straight week, it simply did not matter. Seven days after avenging last year's playoff ouster at the hands of 2011 Group 4 champion Pennsauken in a 22-14 comeback win, the Mustangs knocked off another perennial power as they outlasted Cherokee (1-1) in a dramatic 14-7 thriller. After the game, Triton coach Pete Goetz talked about how his team has risen to the challenge through the season’s first two weeks. “You could definitely say the schedule makers weren’t kind to us, but you know what? We thought we were going to be pretty good, too, this year…

Triton's football players are out to show that last year's 8-3 season was just the beginning.
The 2009 and 2010 seasons did not go well for the Triton Regional High School football team. Only five wins were produced in 20 games, and many lopsided losses were mixed in. But 2011, was an entirely different story. The Mustangs proved themselves to be contenders, not only in the West Jersey Football League, but also in Group 4. One year removed from an eight-win season, the Mustangs are out to prove that last year was no fluke and that the program will continue to thrive. For that to happen, the Mustangs will need a big—and just as importantly, healthy—year from standout running back Josh Woods. Through five games of the season, Woods was on pace to pile up over 2,000 yards, proving to be a threat to go the distance every time he …

The Mustangs improved to 6-1 behind seniors Brian Keller and Jimmy Burns, but star running back Josh Woods left the game early with a knee injury.
Triton improved to 6-1 on Friday night with a 35-6 blowout win over Paul VI (2-5), but could be facing a potentially devastating loss in the wake of their fourth consecutive victory. Junior running back Josh Woods, who had briefly left the game in the middle of the first quarter after an apparent leg injury, returned in the second quarter and sprung a 34-yard run with nothing but daylight in front of him. But Woods, who entered the game only 146 yards shy of the 1,000 yard mark for the season, went down untouched only a few strides after breaking away from a Paul VI defender. Woods did not return. He finished the night with five carries for 47 yards. After the game, Triton head coach Pete Goetz confirmed that Woods suffered a knee injury…

The Mustangs' defense forced four turnovers to improve to 5-1 on the season.
While Timber Creek (6-0) has garnered much of the attention around town for its undefeated start to the season, it might just be time to begin paying attention to sister school and district rival Triton. The Mustangs (5-1), led by a dominant defensive effort and another stellar night from junior running back Josh Woods, battered Bishop Eustace in a knock-down-drag-out fight that didn’t see either offense cross the opponent's 20-yard line until late in the third quarter. While both teams struggled to move the ball, the Mustangs capitalized on four Bishop Eustace turnovers to pull away in the fourth quarter. Woods, who totaled only 30 yards rushing in the first half, broke loose for 83 yards and two scores in the second, providing the only …

The Mustangs return a talented and experienced roster, but will it be enough to win a stacked West Jersey Football League Royal Division title?
Last Thanksgiving, a young Triton football team limped into the final game of a forgettable season against sister school Timber Creek with a 2-7 record. The Chargers had reached the South Jersey Group III quarterfinal game and featured a roster full of talented Division I prospects. But on the way to an outcome that appeared to be all but a forgone conclusion, something funny happened. Triton won. And it won in convincing fashion—exploding on Timber Creek in a 36-14 romp. For the Mustangs, there's reason to believe that game served as a sign of things to come, as it appears the team is on the verge of a breakout season, even as it flies under the radar in the stacked West Jersey Football League Royal Division. Head coach Pete Goetz, a …
