The Philadelphia Eagles made some big picks in the recent NFL Draft and pulled out a few surprises.
There's a lot to get excited about if you're a Philadelphia Eagles fans these days. For numerous years, the fan base has shaken its head after hearing the news about who the Philadelphia Eagles took in the NFL Draft. Does anyone remember Mike Mamula? How about Freddie Mitchell? At least he had great hands—well, Mitchell said he did. So when the Birds were gearing up for the recent NFL Draft, many fans were cringing over who their selections would be. We had visions of Andy Reid dancing in our heads. And even though owner Jeff Lurie absolved general manager Howie Roseman from blame for past drafts, we weren't really buying it. And then the Birds began selecting... Now offensive linemen aren't the sexy picks we all love, but they usually …

The free agent signings so far by the Philadelphia Eagles are very low-key and don't appear to return the team to stardom.
The Denver Broncos sign wide receiver Wes Welker. The Detroit Lions get Reggie Bush for their backfield. And the New England Patriots ink rising slot receiver Danny Amendola to replace Welker. The Philadelphia Eagles signed a bunch of free agents during the first day of NFL free agency late Tuesday too. But you probably never heard of most of the players. Such is the case maybe for how new Coach Chip Kelly is putting together the team's roster for next year. He seems to be focusing more on developing a unit—like a team of college players—than building a group of All-Pros and Dream Teamers. There's not much star power in these signings. It's nice, though, to hear Isaac Sopoaga, the new defensive tackle from the San Francisco 49ers, state at…

A local fan starts a petition to bring back retro jerseys for the Birds.
Do you miss them? Did you love the Philadelphia Eagles so much more when they were in a kelly green jersey? Many fans have come to dislike the new "midnight green," black/charcoal and white design. Perhaps it is the dismal last season, or maybe it just is a longing for yesteryear, but some fans have decided to do something about it. According to an article on philly.com, "Cranekicker," a local twitter personality, has started a petition to bring back the kelly green uniforms of the past. The Eagles had donned the kelly green (with silver eagles' wings on the helmet) uniforms from 1973 to 1995, according to the Eagles year-by-year history. Cranekicker has written a petition to Eagles' owner Jeffrey Laurie to ask for the official team …

After 140 wins—a franchise record—and nine trips to the playoffs, including the 2004 run to the Super Bowl, it's official: Andy Reid is done as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. The team announced the news via a statement on its website, ahead of a noon press conference on Reid's firing. "Andy Reid won the most games of any head coach in Eagles history and he is someone I respect greatly and will remain friends with for many years to come,” said team owner Jeffrey Lurie in the statement. "But, it is time for the Eagles to move in a new direction. Coach Reid leaves us with a winning tradition that we can build upon. And we are very excited about the future.” But did a coach who set a franchise record deserve another chance after an …

Vitt's Saints face the Eagles in New Orleans Monday night.

But talk sports personality Jody Mac wonders if its enforcement is wrapped up in too many privacy concerns.
At Sunday’s I-95 showdown against the Baltimore Ravens, it’s almost guaranteed that some Philadelphia Eagles fans will get too rowdy for their own good and be shown an early exit from the Linc. Thanks to the now “toothy” NFL Fan Code of Conduct (enacted in 2008), they’ll have to jump through some hoops before getting into their next contest. Starting this year, all fans ejected from an NFL stadium for violent, disorderly or abusive behavior will be banned from attending future games until they have satisfactorily completed a four-hour, online Fan Conduct Class. Fans caught returning to their seats without having done so could be arrested as trespassers, and potentially jeopardize a very expensive investment: the Eagles fan code of …

Philadelphia Eagles open season with rough outing against Cleveland Browns.
Too many turnovers. Too many penalties. Too many mistakes. Too bad. The Philadelphia Eagles shouldn't be losing football games to the Cleveland Browns. And they almost did. After losing the lead, the Birds rallied with a little over a minute to pull out a 17-16 victory. A win is a win. But this should have been a blowout. The Birds are supposed to be an elite Super Bowl-contending team while the Browns are supposed to be the doormat of the National Football League. That's why they play the games. And the game played by the Eagles against the Browns Sunday was one of frustration and disappointment. While the Birds produced nearly 500 yards of offense, the offense committed five turnovers, including four interceptions by a rusty Michael Vick…

Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Nick Foles looks like the real deal. Maybe he should be the team's starter.
Forget Michael Vick; we've now got Nick. Sometimes discoveries are made in preseason that amount to ones like finding the Ark of the Covenant, or learning that the world is not flat. The Philadelphia Eagles have made a find of historic proportions: rookie quarterback Nick Foles is the real deal. As Michael Vick tries to stay in a football game for more than two series, Foles has shone like someone who could be the next Dan Marino or Joe Montana. When all "Monday Night Football" analyst Jon Gruden (who knows his stuff) does is blush about Foles the entire game, you know there's something special about this big lug from Arizona. After all, Gruden got to watch Brett Favre grow up in Green Bay. It's one thing when a rookie impresses in the …

Fans at Eagles training camp Sunday share their thoughts on the death of Coach Andy Reid's oldest son, Garrett, dead at 29.
Shock and sadness gripped Philadelphia Eagles fans Sunday upon learning that the eldest son of Coach Andy Reid had died. At training camp at Lehigh University between practices Sunday, fans milled around the merchandise tent, some expressing disbelief upon hearing about Garrett Reid's death. Others, who had already heard the news, said they were stunned and saddened. "I'm heartbroken for his family," said Jason Turner of Lincoln, who heard the news on the radio while driving up to camp. "The Reid sons had some struggles over the last couple of years. This is some sad news." Garrett Reid, 29, was found dead in his bed at the Sayre Park dorms following an almost 10-year struggle with drug addiction and drug dealing. Reid was helping at camp …

If Philadelphia Eagles star QB Michael Vick goes down with an injury, Coach Andy Reid and his staff might be gone, too. Donovan McNabb provides insurance.
The Philadelphia Eagles opened training camp at Lehigh University Sunday with the same expectations as last year—to win it all. But the mantra is a little different for Coach Andy Reid this year—it's win or else. Owner Jeffrey Lurie made that quite clear during his end-of-season speech when he soured on a franchise that had such high expectations after several top-of-the-line free agency signings only to see Reid and his team do a belly flop throughout the whole year. But the Dream Team turned into Team Turmoil as wideout DeSean Jackson bitched about not having a new contract and Pro Bowler Asante Samuel complained about the competition at the cornerback spot. Well, Jackson now has a new contract and Samuel has been jettisoned. But Reid …
