Realignment of Routes 295/42/76 Gets Underway

Preparations for the first wave of construction for the Direct Connect Project, which begins at the end of March or beginning of April, are underway this week.

The nightmare of cars stacked from the Route 70 ramps down to Bellmawr could be over in less than a decade, with the official start of the Direct Connect project Monday. Nearly 30 years in the making, the eight-year, $900 million federally funded project is designed to uncoil the knot of ramps and reshape the Route 295/76/42 interchange, reducing or eliminating the daily commuter clogs. “At long last, South Jersey’s worst traffic nightmare is being addressed,” said state Sen. Donald Norcross, a member of the Senate Transportation Committee, in a statement. “The current interchange doesn’t make sense, creates terrible backups, and is dangerous. This project will completely change how these roads are traveled, creating a much more efficient …

Get Info on 295/42/76 Realignment Project, Thursday Night in Bellmawr

State Department of Transportation representatives will be on hand to answer questions about the major highway project.

The Route 295/42/76 interchange as we know it is on its way out—over the next several years, a series of viaducts, new ramps and bridges will transform the tangled mess of concrete spaghetti in a dramatic redesign. With the Al-Jo set to go the way of the dodo, the state Department of Transportation (DOT) is holding an informal information session Thursday evening in Bellmawr on the project, dubbed Direct Connect. Designed to give residents and commuters a look at what the full project entails—10 new bridges, three miles of noise barriers, 22 retaining walls, and more, among the massive changes to the roads themselves—how long it will take and how it'll help alleviate the daily traffic nightmare that is the current configuration. “This is a…

Letter to the Editor: What's Gloucester Twp. Got Against Route 42 Westbound?

A Laurel Springs man laments the difficulty he has getting to Philadelphia and points west via Route 42.

Dear Editor: I moved to Gloucester Township in 2011 in part for the location and its accessibility to so many places. But I still have roots and conduct business in my former area of Marlton, Voorhees and Cherry Hill, which means I drive Route 295 North regularly.   Why is it so easy to get onto Route 42 eastbound, but getting on 42 westbound to go to Philly or to get to Routes 130/295 seems to require the patience of Job or an illegal act?   I live near the municipal complex, so Coles Road is my main access to 42.  What planner designed the ridiculous one-way stretch next to Skeeter's, requiring a left turn onto Tice Avenue and then a right onto Erial Road to wait for a light to change at a busy three-way intersection? When traffic at the…

Planning Board Approves Billboards Along Route 42

Cooper Health System received the go-ahead to erect three billboards—each up to 60 feet tall—on property it owns along the state highway.

Expect to see billboards, including one with a changing sign face, looming over the stretch of Route 42 running through the township. During a special meeting Wednesday night, the township planning board  unanimously granted preliminary and final approval to a proposal by Cooper Health System to place three billboards—each up to 60 feet high—on land it owns along the state highway. Two of the billboards will have static signs, and the third will be digital, with rotating messages. Cooper owns an undeveloped 113-acre parcel north of College Drive between Route 42 and the Black Horse Pike, to the west of Camden County College's Blackwood campus. Susan Bass Levin, president of Cooper Health System Foundation and a former Democratic mayor of …

Officials Celebrate Opening of New Bridge

The new bridge at Route 42's Exit 7B is now open.

County and municipal officials opened the new bridge at Route 42's Exit 7B with a brief ceremony Tuesday morning. Exit 7B is the first full interchange added to the state highway since it was constructed in the 1950s, according to Camden County Freeholder Ian Leonard. "This project improves the quality of life for the thousands who attend classes and work at Camden County College by providing direct access to the campus, and by doing so it also improves the quality of life for area residents,” said Leonard, who is the freeholder board's liaison to the county Department of Public Works. Gloucester Township Mayor David Mayer pointed to the bridge as an engine for economic growth. "Because this project will foster economic development in …
