Garber, Thyne Receive Hero Awards for Shooting Actions

The Gloucester Township Police Department sergeants came to the aid of an officer who had been disarmed inside the police station on Dec. 28.

Gloucester Township Police Sgts. James Garber and Kevin Thyne have been awarded multiple Camden County Hero Scholarship Fund honors for their efforts during a shootout inside the police station on Dec. 28. The police sergeants received the Purple Heart and Meritorious Service awards during the Hero Scholarship Fund's annual dinner Friday night at Lucien's Manor, in Berlin. Garber and Thyne came to the aid of Ptl. Ruth Burns after she was assaulted and disarmed by a prisoner, who fired Burns' duty weapon. The two sergeants returned fire on Eddie Jones III, 39, of Willingboro, shooting and killing the longtime civilian New Jersey Department of Corrections communications operator. Police Official Thanks Mayor, Directors for Post-Shooting Response

Gloucester Township's deputy police chief thanks three township officials for their efforts in the wake of the Dec. 28 shooting inside police headquarters.

Gloucester Township Police Deputy Chief David Harkins used his final opportunity to speak during Monday night's Township Council meeting to thank three officials he says were a huge help as the township's men and women in blue recovered from the Dec. 28 shooting inside police headquarters. "I just want to publicly thank Mr. (Tom) Cardis, the mayor (David Mayer), Mr. (Len) Moffa and all the support that we got from the incident of the shooting at police headquarters, especially Mr. Moffa and Mr. Cardis, to ensure that our police station was restored as quickly as possible. FOP President OK with Prisoner Processing Protocol

Retired Gloucester Township police officer and FOP Lodge 206 President Brian Bates sees no need to modify protocol for processing prisoners in the wake of Friday morning's shooting inside the police station.

The Gloucester Township Police Department family let out a collective sigh of relief Friday morning upon learning all three officers shot by a prisoner inside the Chews Landing Road police station a few hours earlier were expected to make full recoveries. "It was an incident no one ever wants to be faced with. They went in with a strong hand and they fought the situation. You can be proud of all three of them. ... They came out on top. UPDATE: Prisoner Disarms Gloucester Twp. Cop, Shoots and Injures 3 Officers

UPDATE 2:41 p.m. 12/30: Gloucester Township Police Sgt. James Garber will be released from Cooper University Hospital, where he was treated for a gunshot wound sustained in the police station shootout Friday morning, on Sunday afternoon.
