Highland Runners Continue to Thrive

Highland palced fifth at Saturday's cross-country Sectional Championship, earning a spot at states.

The Highland Regional High School boys’ cross-country team has exceeded expectations all season, so it should come as little surprise that the Tartans did it again Saturday. One year after graduating almost its entire varsity roster, Highland will make a return trip to the State Championships after a fifth-place finish at the Group 3 Sectional. “We ran well,” said Highland coach Bob Wagner. “We ran as good as could be. If we didn’t get the fifth spot, so what? We ran well. Traditionally, we are starting to run well here. We come (to Delsea) and practice at least five out of the last 15 days every year. Getting that fifth spot just completes our season and sets us up for the future.” Even with a mostly inexperienced roster, the Tartans …

Maine's Work About to Pay Off

Highland senior Steve Maine will be one of the favorites at the Group 3 sectional and state meets.

Even runners as dedicated to the sport of cross-country as Steve Maine don’t always want to spend their time running—let alone doing it more than an hour away from home on hot summer mornings. But after a little coaxing from his coach, that’s exactly what Maine did. The Highland Regional High School senior traveled all the way to Holmdel once a week for six weeks to work on one of the most demanding courses in the state. And while he dreaded it initially, Maine knows it’s about to pay off. “I didn’t want to go at first, because it was mornings in the summer, but I realized it could help me,” said Maine, who placed second at the Camden County Championships last week. “Then I realized if I’m going to be any good and accomplish the goals I …

The playoffs came and went for the baseball and softball teams in the Black Horse Pike Regional School District as the spring high school sports season continues to wind down. Track athletes are the lone group remaining in contention for titles, as a handful of runners, jumpers and throwers advanced to this weekend’s State Championships. Below is a look back at the week that was in local sports. BOYS' TRACK It was a great couple of days for several locals at the Group 3 Sectional Championships. The weekend’s biggest winners were Timber Creek’s Josh Gray and Highland’s Steve Maine, who each won a Sectional championship. Lambert, Muse Win Titles: Timber Creek Track Eyes Division Crown

Quanzell Lamber and Jamad Muse each won a title at the Camden County Track and Field Championships on Saturday.

After not competing in a week due to rain, the Timber Creek boys' track program embarked on the start of a busy four-day stretch on Saturday at the Camden County Track and Field Championships. By all accounts, the day was a success. Quanzell Lambert and Jamad Muse took home county titles as the Chargers finished second behind Cherry Hill East. The meet was the first part of a busy stretch that includes a dual meet against Winslow Monday—which will determine the division champion—and the Olympic Conference Meet on Tuesday. “The day was really just about focusing on how we are trying to get through next three days,” said Timber Creek coach Chris Grottini. “We didn’t have anyone (do more than two events). Maine Leads Tartans Into States

Steve Maine finished second in the Group II Sectional Championships, helping the Highland boys' cross-country team reach the state championships.

After missing several days of practice last week due to an illness, questions floated about what level of conditioning Highland Regional High School cross-country runner Steve Maine would be at for Saturday’s Sectional Championships. Maine, the team’s leading runner, competed at far less than 100 percent during last week’s Tri-County Conference Meet and finished a disappointing 11th. However, Maine was back to his dominant self on Saturday, leading the Tartans to a second-place finish in Group II that assured them a place in next week’s state championships. Maine finished second overall, crossing the line in 16 minutes, five seconds. Barnegat’s Matthew Nelson won the race at 15:52. “We have been thinking about this day since we started …

Tartans Cross Country Preps for Sectionals

The Highland boys' and girls' cross-country teams competed in the Tri-County Conference Championships Thursday.

All season long, Steve Maine has been a leading force for the Highland Regional High School boys' cross-country team. Maine helped the team to a Tri-County Conference title and then helped himself to a Camden County championship. However, with Maine sick, the spotlight turned to fellow Tartan Steve Lafferty Thursday at the Tri-County Conference Championships. Lafferty stepped up to the the challenge and nearly led the Tartans to a title. “I felt like I needed to get as close to the front as possible for the team to do as good as we wanted,” Lafferty said. Lafferty ran well, placing fourth and helping the Tartans to a second-place finish at Cumberland Regional High School. Clearview won the team title, with 56 points. Highland was next, …
